Is melee worth playing?

Since brawl is coming out soon (screw the fact that it's delayed again), I was wondering if melee would give you extra practice for brawl. Besides that it's a whole new game, most of the concepts and gameplay are the same.

I don't want to waste time playing a game that's going to be soon forgotten, but then again, I don't want to wait till February. Help?

Ok, Both of you agree that the nostalgia of the game is worth playing.

But I guess my real question is...will playing melee improve my skills in brawl?

Most of the veteran character's movesets seem to be roughly the same. I can't see how Melee could hurt your chances in Brawl, either. I recommend playing it some.

Really yes it will, but this is only true if you play brawl with the GameCube remote. As playing melee will improve your skills mainly because the game mechanics in BRAWL wont change much many people have said this who have played the game.So i think it will,.... :-) At least with the VETERANS they will probably keep there original movesets along with new attacks... or new movesets (maybe)

Brawl is getting easier [note automatic ledge sweet spot] and if things keep going that way pros will just stick to Melee.

Everyone will ditch Melee when Brawl is there because Melee has been out for a really long time, and the pro's need something new.

BTW: Melee had a ledge sweet spot problem, it sometimes ignored the character's position, don't think of it as a difficulty decreaser, just think of it as a fix.

Yeah, but I still think the pros will play Brawl more than melee. Even if it's easier, I think they're putting a lot of new aspects into the game. Like Smashville's platform.

I really don't understand how anyone in a healthy state of mind would prefer playing Melee to Brawl after watching those new gameplay vids...I mean...just LOOK at them from crying our loud!

Personally, even if I was a pro, I currently prefer Brawl, I mean they are pretty much the same game with different stages, a few new items, and a few new stages. Oh and AMAZING graphics

But you aren't so you wouldn't know. Brawl isn't the same is Melee btw.

In the case of this thread, "pro" = "obnoxious Smash elitist". Just fyi.

Brawl is going to be superior to Melee in every way. Period. If a couple of minor things here and there are changed and throw off your precious metagame from what you're all used to, guess what? You can create a new one from Brawl's gameplay. There will still be "pros" that emerge that utilize skills that not every player knows about. Complaining about the game before it's out because some things look tweaked is incredibly stupid and annoying.

Sweet Jesus...

Melee is an excellent game. You'll need something to tide you over until February, and I would absolutely recommend Melee. It is so endlessly replayable (unless you play only high-teir characters in Fnal Destination with no items--then it gets boring after a while) that it will continue to entertain us in the same way that I still LOVE playing the original Smash Bros. Also, Brawl will play very similarly to Melee, so if you plan on maining a veteran your practice will likely still be relevant in the future.

Of course, you may want to expand your game choices to include the likes of Super Mario Galaxy, which is also shaping up to be an awesome game.

Anyway, don't whine about games because they're old. Melee is fun. Smash Bros. 64 is STILL fun. Old Sonic games are fun. Super Mario 64 is fun. Donkey Kong Country is fun. Get over it.

Ok, Both of you agree that the nostalgia of the game is worth playing.

Melee has no nostalgia surrounding it, as we haven't abandoned it for Brawl yet. Also, Nostalgia is not by any means the only reason to like an old game. I mean, some old games just sucked, but still have a chocolaty nostalgic coating (Ice Climber) and others, while they are covered in Nostalgia, are really loved and considered "classics because of the gooey nougatey filling that is awesome gameplay (Donkey Kong Country).

A good game is a good game, regardless of age. THAT is what makes Virtual Console profitable.

Yes Max, every pro is an elitist and every scrub is a ******. I don't know what kind of twisted world you live in so I'll just leave your bubble alone.

Stop being a fanboy. The game isn't even out yet and you're saying "it's better than melee in every way". You're the biggest hypocrite I've ever seen. Bury a seed and grow a clue, please.

I'm interested to see in what area you contend Melee is objectively better than Brawl.

And notice I didn't say that every pro was an elitist. I said "in the case of this thread", clearly referring to people (you) saying that pros would stick to Melee because of things as trivial as ledge sweet-spotting.

*spits* Your words don't taste the same as my words. Where did I say pros would stick to Melee? I remember saying this:

Brawl is getting easier and if things keep going that way pros will just stick to Melee.
Which means if the game gets too easy there won't be a metagame to work with.

I'll even take out that distracting parenthesis so you can see the main point.

So how is Brawl "getting easier"? Some trivial stuff you guys have found by scouring the gameplay videos?

All this metagame obsession is going way too far. Brawl will be JUST FINE. The tournament scene will be strong, I'm sure. Mark my words.

Metagames are tricker than you think, it's the reason some people stay behind with series with sequels like Starcraft, Halo, SoulCalibur etc. even though they're great to the casual eye.

Either way I will get Brawl, whether or not I aim to be pro will be decided by the depth of the metagame and how balanced the game is.

very very very very very few people actually stay behind the series with sequels.

When there's an update for a game, it's usually, if not always, better. No one's gonna stick around playing an old game competitively. Especially when there's not many people to play with. The fact that melee isn't online will also make people forget about it (even if the small chance of melee turning out to be more competitive game that requires more mindgames and skill than brawl).

just throwing my stuff out there.

*points to counterstrike* People stayed behind, lots of people

*points to Nintendo's piss poor online* They might go half *** on online [like how they took out stages in Mario Kart DS] so I'm not holding my breath.

People still play SSB64, they play it online with Kalleria all the time.

I didn't feel like sifting through this entire thread before posting, so excuse repetitiveness.

I still play Melee pretty regularly. Well, depending on how often I see my step brothers, as they're my main source of competition. I don't play alone very often, though I should to keep my skills fresh.

The question: Is Melee worth playing? Well, that depends. Do you already own it? If so, then why the hell not? Would be a suitable way to spend the time until Brawl if you don't have the money to blow on other Wii titles this holiday.

If you don't own the game, it depends on how much you can get a fresh copy for. I think it might be Player's Choice'd for 20 bucks these days, which is an excellent buy as this is still easily the Gamecube's best game and still sports some of the best character graphics I've seen. Heck, I'd almost say it's still worth a 50 dollar price tag...

And you can't go wrong with practice. It's been said that a lot of characters are offering different feels in Brawl, but if you equally practice with every character, then I can't see it being very disorienting. Press reports have said that if you're familiar with Melee that you can pick up veterans extremely easily anyway.

The choice to continue using the same controller is a good strong reason to continue practicing, too.

so for those who didnt own a gcn, remote $15 + game $25 + memory card $12 = $52
nah ill just stick with brawl, although it would be nice to catch up on the good games i missed..

Without a doubt. Melee is still an awesome game, (in fact its better than Halo 3, its just Halo3 has so much hype behind it, people look past its flaws.) Actually seeing all the Brawl info today made me want to play it, and also apparently, its running much the same as Melee. If you don't, your reaction speed, and your overall skill will drop. It is good to keep your skills in peek condition and your reaction time high.

Unless, without a doubt, Brawl owns melee in every single way possible, other people (as well as myself) will casually play melee from time to time. There will be those who stay behind, and those who move forward. It's inevitable.

And unless Brawl sucks balls (which I highly doubt), I'd probably move on to playing Brawl more than melee.

7~ years is a pretty good run for a game, I'd say. **** that was good money spent.

alright in the end I made a conclusion that...

melee is NOT worth playing.

melee has similar gameplay, but the timings/movesets/damage/and all the other little differences will screw up with my future brawl skills. plus i can save all that time playing melee for better use. right now i have more myspace and guitar hero time : D

and no one sets up melee tournaments anymore anyways.

While Brawl makes Melee pale in comparison, Melee will never be forgotten, and, just because a newer version is coming out doesn't mean I'm going to throw away one of the best games I've ever owned. Melee was, and still is, an amazing game. It makes no sense to say it's not worth playing. Sure, I'll play Brawl more, but I still love Melee.

It's like saying Starcraft isn't worth it because Starcraft 2 is coming out...

No. As a matter of fact, invest n a DS.

So many great and fresh titles on that little handheld.
I agree the DS is pretty solid. But I'd still recommend playing Melee. There will be a few changes but the majority of the advanced tactics will still be present in Brawl. If you're looking to play competitively I don't think it would be a bad idea to go and learn some things. But if you're the type that doesn't enjoy competitive play I'd say don't waste your time lol.

Forgot to mention, I wont forget Melee but I'll probably stop playing it once Brawl comes out. I don't think I'm the type to just stick with an old game lol. I've played it to death and while I haven't gone as far as I possibly could take myself with a lot of the other characters I've seen enough of all the ones I'm interested in that my friends play with. I need a roster update which is another reason I want Brawl. I'll probably go and play Melee from time to time to have that "look how far we've come" nastalgia rush.

After im accustomed to Brawl...It wont be. However, if the black hole glitch is utterly impossible in Brawl, i will probably visit Melee from time to time
