Is Lucario a viable secondary?

Hello everyone. This is my first post on Smashboards. I am an aspiring SSBB player, and I have a very simple question for you. Can Lucario be a viable secondary for Lucas?

You may be thinking "why Lucario?". The answer in my eyes is simple. Most of the really via viable secondaries for Lucas are high-tier, and thus, going to be used by everyone. If I wanted to play high-tier characters, I would play MK and DDD. This is not my style.

I like to be the player that nobody sees coming. I like to be the guy with the tricks up his sleeve and his ace in the hole. This is why I love these two characters... Lucas has an obscene amount of advanced techniques that can be chained and combined as the situation demands; and Lucario has the Aura ability, which allows for huge comebacks and a very different playstyle.

My question is, will it work? Right now, I'm practicing with a B-Sticking Lucas and Lucario on regular C-Stick(And while I'm at it, can someone experienced tell me if, with practice, I can get used to alternating B-Stick, and non-B-Stick characters?). I've basically got all of their AT down, and my lucario makes a pretty good match for the MKs I have fought. But I'm not really experience, and I've only recently been into hardcore practicing. Tell me if this is possible, or if I'm jsut wasting my time.

Thanks,
Pleth

welcome to smashboards ^_^

Watch out for MK gimping you if you go lucario. Marth is evenish based on what ankoku is telling me right now.

Just know the the characters that are really good are really good whether anyone sees them coming or not.

Welcome

As long as your second covers Lucas' worst matchups, you're fine.

And Levitas, never underestimate the power of surprise. In general, people don't know Lucas that well, so you can pull off things you wouldn't be able to pull off on someone who knows lucas, such as grab combos or U-smashes.

Lucas and Lucario share the bad match-ups of MK, Marth, and G&W- and that is just from what is done so far on the Lucario match-up thread. Generally your not going to be playing those matches as Lucas (maybe MK, but neither of the other 2), so unless you feel your Lucario is good enough to overcome a 40:60 match against you..... its not looking so good. Don't forget that people maining a certain character are probably better than your 2nd, so your going to have to be **** good if you plan on beating any of those with Lucario.

Honestly, I think your time could be better spent learning another character. Marth, MK, Diddy, and Snake seem to be good bets, from responses, in these:

another 2nd thread for Lucas
ANOTHER 2nd thread. for Lucas.

^running theme in Lucas boards?

I like the fact that people dont know what to expect from Lucas lol
When they see how strong his smashes are, how overwhelming his nair is, how much damage dair does, and his crazy AT's...etc.
When I brawled Anther I zap jumped and he was amazed
he said he has never seen that before:chuckle:

As for Lucario being a good 2nd for Lucas....not so much...like c3gill said they pretty much have the same bad matchups...
Marth, G&W, and of course MK are the best choices for a secondary

Also, I personally use ZSS as a secondary since she can handle Lucas' two worst matchups,Marth and G&W really good

Oh yea and welcome to Smashboards
new Lucas main:)

Thanks for the responses guys.

And again, I will NOT be seconding(or maining) MK, DDD, Snake, or really anyone in the top 2 tiers for the reasons listed in my first post.

Also, levitas... I understand your concerns; But I have played other games, and I have found that the element of surprise can be incredibly powerful. With a character such as Lucas who is very underwhelming both according to tiers and aesthetics, it can be very easy to set someone off and cause them to make a whole plethorea of mistakes. This is the way I play the game. If I can't beat M2K and NinjaLink, that's okay with me. What I really want is to play some underused (and possibly underrated) characters to improve my skill, and hopefully their metagame too.

But I will consider finding better matchups for Lucas' bad matches. Once again, thanks for the replies... I REALLY appreciate them.

Zss looks like a better potential in terms of going on the rise + dealing with some tough matchups. If lucario suits your style fine, but it won't do much good in terms of overcoming bad matchups.

A couple people have already said it but ill say it again... The point of a secondary usually is to have that character be able to take on whatever characters are bad match ups for your main, they have the same bad match ups so i dunno how its really going to benifit you.
