Don't listen to him. Our Brawl (and PM) group uses either component or a wii cable that goes directly to HDMI (no converter needed).

Both will cause minuscule lag, but it's honestly not even noticeable once you get used to it. I've been playing PM competitively for like 4 months now and I have no problem switching between LCD's with component or HDMI to CRT's. And that even applies for the more technical characters like spacies. I actually practice at home on an LCD and have no problems with it. It may take a while to get used to if you've only played on CRT's but it's honestly not that bad.

If you're connecting to HDMI though, don't get something that upscales. That will just cause extra lag. Something like this http://dynamic.focalprice.com/GW535...gclid=CIys2vfQ_rICFUWnPAodxBQAtg#.UHm0R5E8pAc would be ideal (although I would do some research and make sure you get what you need). Also, if your monitor has a game mode, that will help it to have less lag. I would check for that. There are a lot of little tweaks you can do (like setting the wii to output 480p instead of 480i) that will help reduce lag. You've just gotta mess with stuff and find out what works best.

Edit: Actually, I talked to one of my friends and he uses the wii2HDMI converter that you posted and says it works fine with very little lag.

It's not that bad, but once you've been playing on CRT's for years you notice the difference in frames instantly when switching to an LCD. You have to input things frames earlier and that can mess up timing.
Honestly just use a CRT, they have better processing power and no lag. GG.

The problem with Blondie's way of thinking is that once you go from an LCD to a CRT you're going to be used to a much different feeling no matter how small the lag is.

There are LCDs though that I've played on and experienced no lag. I swear it, but I've only played on two of them and I don't remember what brands they were.

So they exist, but they're rare. Especially since games these days don't need to be made differently to run smoothly on LCDs.

You could also just get an HD CRT. I don't believe the technology has developed past 1080i, but for the Wii and P:M, that will more than suffice. Plus, they aren't that expensive nowadays and the option for component or HDMI are both available.

There are wii to vga adapters that exist that are said to not induce lag due to the connection being analog to analog. At the end of the day, you may have some minute amount of lag, but if it's worth it to you, then go for it.

I was already on eBay. The selection isn't fantastic, and you get a lot of "hometown pickup only" BS for stuff like that because it's heavy and shipping it would be ridiculous, both to pack and the cost.

An HD CRT is something I've been on the lookout for for a while now, while in the mean time I've been looking for some flat screens that are lagless.

Like I said. Found two. But it was by chance and I didn't take note of what they were.

True, but what's the fun in gaming if you don't have to drive several hours to give some stranger your hard earned money for a used TV? Its all about the journey, man.
