Is it looked down upon?

I have only recently begun playing Melee. I really want to get invested into Smash culture as well as up my game. Obviously, tournaments are the places for me to go. For those of you that usually go to tournaments though, is it usually looked down upon to enter tournaments when you are still "scrubby"?

(Also! What would your opinion be of this "scrub" entering a bigger tournament? Such as the upcoming Sandstorm?)
