Its almost as if Brawl doesn't exist in Smash 4. In the Sound Test, the remixes from Brawl don't say that they're from Brawl and there's almost no references to it at all (in the 3DS version at least). I really liked Brawl, it was my first smash game. It's only when I played Smash 4 that I realised how casual it was. Is Sakurai treating it like a big mistake?

I dont think Sakurai thinks Brawl is a mistake. Brawl succeeded in the way Sakurai wanted it to succeed; he wanted it to be a good party game.

just cuz it makes no direct references to its name doesn't mean it acts like it doesn't exist, like fishbowl even said, the game has several brawl stages in it, several pieces of music from brawl, its gameplay is far closer to brawl than melee, smashrun has tons of enemies from brawl appear, and heck even the backround from smashrun seems to be loosely based on what's left of the events that happened in the sse from brawl in some areas of the stage.

Nah, definitely not, the gameplay foundation is closer to Brawl than any other installment after all. The Subspace Emissary is also referenced in multiple trophies.

I know that Smash Bros. on Wii U actually has Brawl's menu theme as an option in My Music, the Pokemon Trainer trophy directly refers to his appearance in Brawl, and I'm pretty sure Lucas' trophy is based off of his art for Brawl. Just to name a few.

They haven't forgotten it yet but they will in the future since Smash 4 is better in both ways as a party game and a competitive game so it seems as if brawl was just apart of the learning process to make smash 4 and smash 4 will be remembered by fans and the creators while brawl will just fade away and turn into smash 4 lite

Brawl is referenced by name on various trophies. I recall Pokémon Trainer's trophy being an example.

It has enemies from the Subspace Emissary in Smash Run.

It has various re-used assets from Brawl (menu sounds, battle sounds, voice clips, fonts, some interactive objects in Smash Run like Springs and Challange Doors, etc).

It has the little part from the theme song in the credits.

Foundation of the game is closest to Brawl, basically fixes all major fundamental issues from Brawl and speeds things up too.

Most "Past Stages" are from Brawl.

There is more, but from the 3DS version alone, you can see that Brawl is fondly remembered by the dev team.
