i play a very decent marth and i like to mix things up.

i use counter maybe 3-6 times per round if it seems effective, i quit if it's not doing it for me.
however, most of the vids i see, counter is not used at all. only maybe for getting recovering characters.

so should i just quit using counter altogether as i continue playing marth?

the ways, i use counter are to fool with an aggressive opponent or use it when i predict an opponent is going to attack based on their rhythm. oh btw, that's how i usually read my opponent. if they like to dash dance alot and then attack, i can usually know when they are truly going to attack based on the frequency of their attacks, may not always work though

Nice job reading your opponent dude!

But, nah, counter is not bad, especially if your reading your opponent as well as you say you do. When ppl ask if using counter too much is bad, usually you can pretty much answer your own question. If you use it 5-6 times per match and it works everytime, then what's so bad about that? If your opponent sees it coming and baits it and you get upsmashed for it, maybe it's time to stop, y'know? You seem like you work well with counter by what you say, so it shouldn't be a problem for you.

Most of the time, you could've used something else before the opponent attacks. You can't combo with counter, while you might be able to with the other attack you could've used. Basically, ask yourself whether you have better options before countering because a successful counter is just 7% or something like that, while a fair might mean a stock.
But counter is still good in certain situations.

I find counter is only effective against other Marths. Against any other character, marth has enough range and speed to do even more damage.

The only exception to this I find is for edge guarding.

i think that if you can get a good 2 or 3 counters in, your opponent will usually play more cautiously, this is usually when i become more agressive. but hey that's just me

greenblob, you bring up a very good point. i do know that there are other options when using counter. i usually use it when i think the opponent might have a priority advantage such as when falco is coming close with the lasers or when someone coming in from behind me.

yeah, i should experiment to see if other attacks can be used more effectively in certain situations

Counter is an effective way to deal with falco laser spam.
If he advances with a short hop laser, counter it and you'll hit him before he can combo you.

I play against my brother's fox alot, and I spam counter. It totally messes him up to the point where he spams grabs on every approach, which I punish mercilessly :D

I used to use counter about 30+ times a match beacuse I played a very agressive/stupid sheik. also my noob opponents were very easy to read. When your opponents get smart and wait for the counter then you should use it less.

Also listen to green blob. unless your frames away from getting smacked, there are better moves you could have used.

1-2 consecutive counters can break your opponents focus. your 5 to 6 counters are just fine just don't get like i used to be

Ive learned from exessive countering that sidestepping tends to be more usrful than counter, so now i have 30+ sidesteps instead of 50 billion counters

If you look at the frame data, the jab is faster than the Counter, and so is the fair, so it's not as good of a reaction as you think. There's also the issue of it not being linkable to a combo.

You can use the Counter as a good edgeguard though, when you're in an awkward position and can't fsmash properly.

Counter is a good move, underused by most pros, but i know ken uses it and whenever I use it it seems to work, so whatever works for you

Ken barely uses it. The most I've seen him use it was like three-five times against PC Chris, who later on figured out the trick.

The only thing I really use the counter for is against Foxes shine-spike and Falco's Dair over the ledge. Other than that it's only really useful for surprising your opponent.

Counters are my favorite way to stop aggressive edge guards. Like sheiks and their blasted fairs. But I only use it if I'm recovering above the ledge and I see sheik start hte jump toward me.
Otherwise I jsut use counter as a combo breaker here and there if my fair isn't coming out fast enough for some reason.

the only time u wanna use it is if

1.if ur sure it will help.
2.if u know that the use of edgeguarding with it will help

things not to do

1.spam it,it makes no sense.
2.use it againt laser spam.ur still gonna be taking damage because of the lag from the counter

hope this helps a bit...

I usually do it when I'm just back to stage and I know that my opponent would most likely try to get me into an edgeguardable situation, though most of the time I just attack him/her before he/she can. (I rarely play againts notably good players anyway)

There was a Roy player who I used to play with and he would always be such a counter *****, using it 5 times in a row, most missing. There were so much more options for him than just to use counter too. They can be pretty predictable if used often which is one reason why I think pros don't use it as much. One can be tricked into using a counter attack and be punished heavily for it, which is why I don't use it that much neither. I'd rather keep the battle fast-paced.

The problem with counter is it's moderate risk and low reward. If it works, um... woot, 7 damage. If it misses, bad things occur. It'll work a lot of the time, but it's not really worth it because of the punishment you'll take if it misses.

i mean if it works, theres no reason to not do it
its not that powerful, but if you didn't counter, you might have dodged, and dodging doesn't add damage to your opponent so *shrugs*

You should only counter when you're sure that they're going to attack, and only enough so that it'll still most likely be a surprise each time. Infact, in most games I don't counter at all, but then when I do throw in a counter here or there, it's usually effective.

Falco is a good character to counter against, however, since his game is so offensive. However, you should still use it sparingly, and by mixing up counters with attacks to punish their hesitancy, you will... **** with their head?

Captain Falcon is also a character against who I find myself able to counter more effectively, as Captain Falcon seems to jump out with aerials often (well, almost his whole game is based around aerials), though you do need to watch out for grabs.

Post in my video thread please? :)

Ya, counter can be annoying, and based off my experience as shiek (marth's bane) counter can throw off combos and really distort the fight. Tho if over done, like any move, it can be anticipated and compensated.
