Is it bad to have so many mains?

It could be, but It could be good too. In my opinion having a lot of people is okay but you should still focus on at least a few. As you can see though (My Signature) I am not very good at listening to myself... >,<

See I try to stick with the first 4 most of the time, but so many characters are good now...

If you're trying to actually get better at the game, you should stick to trying to learn at most 3 characters very well instead of trying to learn a bunch of characters decently. This will not only help improve your play with the characters you choose to put the most focus on, it'll improve your general gameplay, which ends up indirectly improving your play with other characters you like and want to play just for fun. That said, if you're only trying to have fun and not all that serious about improvement, there's nothing wrong with "maining" lots of characters--if you could even call it maining at this point.

Currently I main: :marth::roypm::ike::bowser2::toonlink::mewtwopm::sonic::lucario::charizard::dk2::ganondorf::dedede::peach::snake::mario2:
And I'm looking into::luigi2::sheik::warioc::metaknight::kirby2::yoshi2::squirtle:

Is that bad?
In general, your focus is probably spread too much. You won't be able to dive into the intricacies of many of the characters. You'd have to put in way more time than you can probably dedicate to all of those characters to get proficient enough with them at tournament level.

2-5 characters sounds like a good number. If you can pull off more than that though and still win, more power to you.

That looks to be a little much though...

You can't be equally good with ALL of them. Look at the three you find the best and focus on them.
It's not like you can't pick the rest and screw around with them, just have a focus of some sort.

Six is fine. Or at least, I'd say so. (totally not biased at all. *whistles*)

...I see 7.
Anyways, I main Ike and play around with Meta Knight/Zard when Ike has a bad matchup. I recommend you find a few characters that cover each others strengths while you still find comfort in them. For example, Marth and Roy have many similar matchups and I advise you main the one you feel better with. As for other characters, I don't know how you play so I'm not sure how to advise you on this part. Just try to find a trio of balance so to speak.

I play Sheik/Zelda, Fox, and Diddy competitively, and I feel spread thin. Most of my focus goes into Sheik/Zelda. Fox is just Fox. I still have things to master with Diddy so he only sees a little bit of playtime in bracket. I couldn't imagine myself seriously playing more than that spread, even though I'm interested in many other characters. That's what friendlies are for :)

You can't possibly "Main" six characters there is no way that you are equally good with all of them. If you spending your time divided between all of them, none of them are going to be good as if you had focus more on one.

I'd say... take your two best, make the rest into secondaries.

I currently main Roy exclusively, but I'm going to main another character in the future once I feel my grasp on Roy is solid enough.

Often, being good with two characters is enough to give you someone to switch over to in bad matchups. In the last event I went to, my Roy couldn't do much against Zelda, so I switched over to Falco with better but still iffy results since I'm nowhere as good with this character..

You can have several secondaries, but too much is generally going to spread your practice thin on each of them.

I'm maining Snake currently with a nice side of Sonic and Bowser. I feel the three compliment each other well and cover the other's weaknesses. I'd suggest picking 3 Characters at most and just switching between them, Next week Sonic might be my main, it's just how I'm feeling that specific day and what play style I want to use.

Personally, I'd say pick one main, then one or two competitive secondaries, and set the rest out as characters you'd still like to learn noncompetitively (this doesn't mean that they aren't valuable for improving). That way, you can focus on completely developing one character. When you feel like progress is slow with your main, consider moving "out a level" and readying your secondaries for competition. It will likely take a while to move beyond your secondaries, but when you do your focus should mostly be on gaining fundamentals and MU knowledge and just enjoying the different playstyle.

This game's engine is SO incredibly easy to learn compared to other fighting games that main-count really only helps in the long run. As long as you stay fresh with your fundamental skill sets you'll be fine with just about any number characters you want. I'm sitting at what... 26-7 now?

A main is the character you are best with. The rest are just characters you like playing. I'm not saying don't play other characters, just don't say every character is your best.

EDIT: Post #200, woot!

See my main thing is that I play all the Fire Emblem Guys. My other fantastic characters are Tink and Bowser. My good character is Mewtwo and my still learning character is Ganon.

Your main should refer to who you are best as... over time people use it to refer to who they like to play. THIS IS FALSE!
Ask your playmates who you are best as. Who they tell you is your current main.

If you want to play competitively find the counter-picks to your main and counter-pick those with 1 or two characters that you like to play as: these are your secondaries.

Everyone else are always open for friendlies.

You should definitely try to drop more than a few of the characters you have listed there. Trust me, I get the need to want to be good with every character - but realistically it just doesn't work out much of the times. You need to cut down to the characters you enjoy using the most for what they are most effective at doing. Like my Roy. One of his best attributes is getting right in your face and hitting your opponent hard; especially with combos. But certain characters aren't great with it, like Samus. She can do a lot of damage, but a lot of it comes from her projectiles, and her super wave dash - which is incredible by the way.

Looking at your mains, it seems like your in almost the exact situation I was in several months ago.
At one point, I thought I could play 90% of the cast fairly well. However, I would learn soon that clearly wasn't the case. When playing with my competitive friends who stuck to one or two characters, I rarely ever won, and when I did, it was mostly because the match-up was ridiculously in my favor.

Obviously, I wasn't content with losing, so I made a concerted effort to stick with one character (:marth:). After, a few weeks, I instantly saw the progress I was making, and started beating some of my friends with regularity. Today, I'd say I'm one of the top 2 players in my group of friends, which isn't saying much, but it's progress nonetheless.

Even then, I still have urges to pick up a LOT of characters (namely
:ike:, :jigglypuff:, and :pikachu2:), but I'm trying to resist.
Like most have said, you should only focus on one main if you are truly serious about getting better and getting into the competitive side (which is what I want).
If not, then there is really no reason to do that.

It's fine to learn multiple characters as you see fit to cover matchups you have trouble with. Personally I recommend you stick with one character and get super good with them, or pick one with two alts at most, but that's just me.

You'll always have a best character. Nobody's godlike with every character they use unless they already got really good at the game to begin with (Mango).

Well with every char you have to learn 40 MUs, unless you always counterpick certain characters with one of your mains. But I still think it's better to stick with one (see Armada).

But I want to keep the FE guys...
Then just play the 3 fire emblem guys. There's no reason that you can't go back and change your mains later down the road. The important part is to get the number down and to play characters that you enjoy the most. :)

Alrighty then! So I guess I'm on :marth::roypm::ike::bowser2: for mains and :toonlink::mewtwopm::ganondorf: for secondaries. Is that good?

I'd say drop one more into your secondary and then have at the lab and tournaments and other players. Make sure to record and study your matches, ask for advice, watch other mains of your characters, etc. and I'm sure you'll see vast improvement in the next few months.
