Is dodging a lot a smart or dumb thing to do?

I notice when watching a lot of pro matches/streams that they don't dodge as much as I normally did when playing smash. What's wrong with dodging a lot? Are they able to take advantage of the lag or something?

If they notice you air dodge a lot, they will take advantage o that and will hit you right as it ends, when you would ACTUALLY need the airdodge. Airdodge a ARENT a good thing to just speckle into your playstyle here and there, you should only airdodge if you see somethin coming, which is reliant on your ability to quickly react. So yes, airdodging TOO MUCH is bad, usually you want to use an aerial to cancel their aerial, instead of airdodge every time, because your opponent will pick up on that and abuse it.

Dodging should not be spammed, as like what's been said already, opponents will catch onto your evasive maneuvers, and devise a way to counter them quickly.

It is smart until the enemy learns to predict it. Once they start to predict it, it becomes dumb. Don't become predictable.

This. If you notice that you've become predictable.... Stop doing whatever it is your doing and change your gameplan. This includes dodging.

It's not necessarily about the dodging specifically, it's about being less predictable which can improve your performance in any PvP game.

Dodging in particular is a mechanic that can be abused and skilled players in particular see through it.

Aside from that, there isn't anything, objectively "wrong" with using dodge a lot.

Predictability is always a downfall. Dodges are fine, but the predictability factor is what kills it. For example, if you're constantly dodging, the opponent can learn to time the animations just right to punish you accordingly.

You saw a lot of pros dodging right? That's why you think that dodging a lot is a pro thing to do, well..........not exactly. It depends your timing and skill, keep rolling around may help you avoid ground attacks, but using it too much could cause fatal results.

I dodged successfully a lot with Mewtwo, I can see myself doing the same with Palutena, so I personally think it depends on your playstyle and character. Dodging, as mentioned does have it's pros and cons, but if you know how to play, you KNOW how to play. Doesn't matter how much you dodge or don't dodge.

Everyone else has said it already, but yeah. Dodging too much can make you predictable, and more adaptable players will punish you for it.

Dodges are ok but like almost everything in life "excess is wrong"
The reason why Lv. 9 CPUs are so predictable is because their insane dodging and and shielding, leaving them open for punishing.
A tip is practicing dodges but use them only in specific situations and focus on pressure your oponent to make it dodge and shield more frecuently and punish that.

A good player will predict you rather quickly and respond in kind to your constant spamming of dodging so no, it's not a smart thing to constantly dodge.

Dodges cover 20+ frames. Any player who relaxes and drops their reaction times (faster) will be able to see through dodges without even trying and hit you with 2-3 frame type moves that lead into combos. 20 frames doesn't seem like a lot, but the game is run at 60 fps, so that's 1 third of a second. The minimum reaction time for a human is less than that.

Other than that, rolling and dodging too much will make it progressively harder to evade attacks as your opponent sees what you're doing. Rolling around an opponent might give you some time to punish an opponent if they fail to respond and attack resulting in a miss. However, not all opponents are blind attackers, so they'll be able to respond to your dodging and punish you for it.

Rolling and dodging is a good thing, but you shouldn't be on the defensive too much, or it gives the opponent time to read into your strategy. You should apply pressure to the opponent, that way they don't have as much time to think about a counter strategy to your movements.
