Instafloat Aerials?

So this question was brought to my attention by that c-stick thread in general melee discussion.

So I've always used control stick + a for floating or float cancelled aerials. It sacrifices control, but it's just easier to slide the thumb to hit both y and a.

Of course, if I want to do retreating fairs or advancing bairs, I'll have to use the c-stick while floating. How do you all suggest I do this?

I've heard some people suggest the claw, but to me it seems a bit too awkward. I'd prefer to keep my right hand in its initial position, which would probably mean that I move the c-stick with the base of my thumb.

I could also put in a direction to float, then hold up on the control stick, and cstick down after i no longer have to hold y... I don't think that's worth it, though, because I still lose some control over DI.

IMO, I never really feel the need to retreat FC an aerial. What I do is I jump back a little with a short hop, go into a float, then target my fair at the spot I started. This is so if I feel that a spacey is gonna shffl an attack, the short hop gets me out of the way, and the fair is a counter attack. I often does this when I feel at all in danger of being attacked because the FC lag is so short that it doesnt really leave you open to much unless your opponent is trying to bait you into doing it. Its a pretty safe tactic.

So to answer your question, I don't do it at all.

Quick question which is a branch off of this. Suppose you're trying to punish a laggy move out of shield like marths f-smash or jiggs foward b. Do you insta-float nair in that case? Or do you just retreat like you said you would if you were up against a space animal?

When you're cool like me you don't need no stinking c stick to retreat with fairs! =D

no seriously, Float has serious momentum, it's nothing like say jigglypuff moving in the air, you can hold a direction and let go and you'll keep on going a ways. Just apply that principle. Easiest way is to be in the air and double jump away and start a float immediately while holding away. The double jump will actually dip you down a bit plus give you a nice momentum in whatever direction. Quickly tap the other direction and A and then go back to holding away. You lose very little backwards momentum, if any.

Unfortunately, XIF, I'll never be as cool as you. But yeah I get what you're saying.

That's generally what I do, too. I give myself an initial momentum, and then the input from the aerial takes away a bit of that, but not too much.
