In melee did people want to ban marth? like they want to ban metaknight now?

No. Although Marth had a higher dominance rating (55% to MK's 35%), no one considered banning Marth (mostly because Marth wasn't considered the best character despite tourny results)...

I think the reasoning was that, despite Marth's tourney dominance, a lot of it came from the fact that the best players were playing him. Meta-Knight can win even in the hands of a fairly bad player. It doesn't seem like enough reason for a ban to me, but that's the logic as far as I can tell.
