"Improper file format" in 3ds Max

I'm trying to change Red (pokemon trainer) into Blue, the rival from the original Pokemon games. I'm using the old DasDonkey Vertex Box and BrawlBox 0.63d, and 3ds max 2010. When I convert the vertex set for his hat/hair and import it into 3ds max i get an "Improper file format" message and the file won't open. All the other vertex sets from Red work when I import them into 3ds max so I'm pretty sure I'm doing it right. Is there any fixable reason that particular vertex set won't work?
