During the e3 presentation, they announced a total of 3 (technically 5) characters for the future Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. Obviously, some people were dissapointed by a myriad of things, such as the Amiibo, Pac-Man using his "Pac-Man World" appearance, as well as characters like Ness and Ridley not being announced at the moment. So, I have to say to my fellow Smashers on this board....

What do you think of the game, as it is right now? And how do you think your impressions will change as the development wraps up and the game is released?

I'd like to hear it.

Currently I only have my eye on the 3DS version, so my only disappointment is that not a lot of its gameplay is shown off. Still, I love the core gameplay of Smash and that's still around. Minuscule things like not being able to cancel this or DI that don't matter to me because I have no aspiration of playing at that level. I just want to play a fun game, and force Miis of all my friends and coworkers to battle.

I don't own a 3DS, and I'll probably just get the Wii U version.

Kinda disappointed that you can't use Miis online though.

speak for yourself, pac-man using his pac-man world design is the best possible outcome for him imo

Any other Pac-Man design would've been disgusting! The game looks even better than I expected!

I would've preferred him just being a circle with a mouth.

I like game & watch's redesign as it makes him look more like he did in his original games, however the lack of outline will make him even harder to see on dark stages then he already is. Kinda Ironic considering the effort they went to add the outline to the characters on the 3DS version.

How would he attack then?

Pizza Pac-Man would've been SO underwhelming.

Another note, I wasn't particularly amazed by Palutena's announcement, although I would've much prefered it if she was an Assist Trophy.

I'm happy. Miis look interesting(love the gunner style), Pac-Man is ADORABLE and hilarious, and Palutena is a another unique character. Amibo looks like a great concept, and customization options are nice. Mechanics aren't up to my standards from what it seems, but I'm more than okay with it. Only disappointment is October 3rd release date for 3ds version.

Overall, no real complaints with Smash 4. I'm still hyped.

Same. I don't think Kid Icarus is the kind of franchise that deserves more then one rep (Let alone 3, as it's seeming like it will be).

Maybe if They had more then 3 games in the span of 25 years (2 of which were handhelds, 1 which came out in the last 20 years) I would be all right with it, but as it stands it seems like clear bias of Sakurai's part.

Maybe for you, but I personally have never been a fan of Pac-man's Design when he has legs and arms. My favorite thing he can do in smash that I've seen so far is his (Side B?) Where he turns into a circle and eats a trail of dots, that's awesome.

I do like the inclusion, nevertheless; we have THREE highly requested characters now in Smash Bros.

Now if we could just get Ridley...

I think the game is turning out to look really great. I like the amount of content, and how much effort their putting into making it as bright and fun and colorful as they can. Im liking the characters so far, and I think once we see more like ness / wario / captain falcon ect. it'll be looking like the best smash bros game honestly. As for how it plays, I cant say until I've played it. But Ive honestly never had much of a problem with brawl, even if I am aware of the issues with it. Speaking of brawl - when this game was first shown off last year I thought visually it wasnt so different from brawl aside from it being in hd, but now looking.. brawl is not holding up very well.

I haven't seen anyone hating on Pac-Man World's design, everyone seemed to prefer it over the Ghostly Adventures look. Either way, I'm glad they went with the look they did.

Regarding the game itself, I'm kinda split. Visually, it looks gorgeous. The new characters are mostly great. The stages look cool, although a bit oversized and chaotic. I'm a bit disappointed at all the reports that it feels sluggish and a lot of the advanced techs are still missing. Hopeful that it will be fine-tuned before released, cautious that it won't be.

I'm not criticizing it. I'm just saying that I've seen a ton of people who have.

I MUCH prefer it over the Ghostly Adventures model.
I actually think the Ghostly Adventures model looks better. lol

G&W made a cameo in the Pacman video, I really hope he's not a veteran character. He was a nice retro touch in Melee, and I was surprised he made it to Brawl, he must be more popular than I ever thought if he makes it to SSB4.

You want to cut Mr. Game & Watch?

No, but seriously, he's one of the most creative character ideas ever.

G&W is definitely returning.

All we need at the moment is Captain Falcon, Ness, Jigglypuff, and Wario for this game to be complete.

Personally I was raging through the entire thing. The minute I saw "Mii fighters" I facepalmed and the presentation made me lose faith in Nintendo. Then they announced Palutena and while I like her, she is a god and doesn't belong in a fighting game. If I understand correctly, she GAVE PIT HIS POWERS... meaning she could just take them away. Of course then again, she said she wanted to have fun so maybe she is fighting fair.

Then they announced Pac-Man, a character that had absolutely no movesets or anything so he couldn't be in Smash Bros. They ended up giving him Namco themed attacks and it seemed EXTREMELY forced. He doesn't belong in Smash Bros and the fact that they included him and Mii's just shows me that Nintendo has no integrity anymore and that literally anything is possible. Smash Bros is about video game crossovers and the fact they have these generic "custom" characters completely destroys the atmosphere. They might as well have just put a custom character creator because you can't customise Mii's enough to make them resemble other characters or anything, they all look like poorly designed durpy kiddy friendly idiots.

Nintendo can redeem themselves by putting actually relevant characters or GOOD characters like Krystal in the game but the Mii's have undoubtedly destroyed the hype for me. It makes me worry for Smash Bros future. This is all just my opinion though. The final straw would be putting Ridley in the game. If he's in the game as a playable character then Nintendo is obviously just trying to grasp at straws to please EVERY SINGLE weaboo online. Smash Bros has always retained some respect for not forcing characters into the game just because of overwhelming fan demand but it seems like they are willing to do anything now just to sell copies. -golf clap-

Honestly, I want to like the game, I really do. But after seeing post after post of how the game sucks. I'm starting to get worried. My hype levels are pretty much dead. And I can't really say I'm all that excited for it anymore. I was before sure, but now I've begun to second guess myself.

I do plan on trying the demo myself to at least see for myself what it is. But all this is really bogging down on me ya know.

Sakurai stated that he didn't want more characters than Brawl, which was 35 characters. There's are 33 confirmed characters on the Official Smash Bros page, if G&W makes the cut then that leaves only 1 more character slot. G&W was definitely unique but I feel like more people would be happy with other vets (like Ness or Wario) or even more newcomers we can get excited about.

Pac Man is Namco's mascot...
How is it forced if Namco's mascot is using Namco-themed attacks?

Your reasoning for Palutena also doesn't make sense. She's a goddess, so what? Link has mastered time, Rosalina runs the galaxies, Mario has blown up galaxies just by jumpung around and spinning, Sonic runs at extreme speeds... By your logic, a lot of characters are "fighting fair."

Ridley is one of the remaining Nintendo All-Stars that is not playable in Smash. It doesn't take fan demand to see that.

And Miis. What's the big deal with those? Destroys the atmosphere? You aren't required to play as a Mii. You wont have to even see them when playing with Anyone Online. And if you haven't been tuning into E3, all characters can be customized, not just Miis, so in a way, every single character can be "custom."

All righty then. So let me start by saying something, it's a misquote. Sakurai did o't say "There will only be 35 characters" exactly.
He said: “we have probably already reached the limit of what’s feasible. A change of direction may be what’s needed”. Now, while I could be wrong, this could mean a ton of things. Despite that, it could just simply mean he wants to look in a new direction as he's already done everything he could in one.

But, implying that this is true. And I'm wrong, this would mean the cast we have (along with Mr. G&W) is 34. And since he did make a mention about Captain Falcon, then that would mean 35. So then what you're telling me despite the fact that we're missing numerous fan favorites (not to mention a reference to Ice Climbers, making it technically 36), this is the cast anyway. Somehow I highly doubt that.

The game really isn't my thing. No ATs (expected), and just overall is Brawl 2.0 from first appearances (really thorough first appearances) I'll definitely be playing PM on a 'srs' level. I'll probably still regrettably pick Smash 4 up, if only because I'll have a WiiU anyways by then for all the other amazing games coming out.

I don't think Smash 4 is as bad as everyone's making it out to be, perhaps because I didn't look at it from a technical, tournament player perspective. I don't think SSB4 will overtake P:M or Melee in the tourney scene but this game's gonna be great if you're just looking for some non-serious gameplay with your friends.

SSB4 and P:M are going to form a great core for Smash fans.

Keep in mind that it's still in development, and currently being balanced out as we speak. The "speed" of the game could change.

I really ended up liking everything I saw, even Pac-man and the Miis, I mean, after seeing what they've done with the miis, I was genuinely hyped for Pac-man, even though I previously despised the very idea of them on Smash, so yeah, I think I'll like the game, even if it has Ridley playable on it (and I really don't like him).

Yeah, it seems to be a much balanced and quick version of Brawl, which I like, though I might change that opinion if really ends up being as defense based as Brawl is, and if it does, whatever no one's taking P:M away, and this game look's to be very fun in way that Brawl rarely ever was.

In conclusion, I think I'll be getting the game on both platforms if possible, if the game ends up dissapointing (which I really don't will happen) the vast amount of characters and features will suffice, as it seems to be shaping up to be an experience all of it's own.

I like all the things I'm seeing in the game and it looks fine. The roster reveals has completely killed my hype for the game, though. It would take getting a reveal of Ganondorf with a completely new moveset (which honestly I've changed my mind, I don't think ****ing Sakurai is going to do it at this point), or a character NOT on the leak being announced to bring my hype back up again. I'll probably still get the game eventually. Considering my financials, though, its going to be tight, and I'm really not feeling the hype anymore.

To quote what I said in another thread;

Ok so I just got back from the Smash Fest. I stood in line for four hours to play 2 minuets and watch other people play. And I can definitely say that I can't make a strong opinion, good or bad, on the game.

Only 2 mins, FFA, items, and uncomfortable controller wasn't really the best experience to get a feel of the game. I was unable to test out anything I wanted. So yea, I have no strong impressions either way from the demo. And I don't think I am going to go through that again for Saturday, because it just doesn't seem worth it to do it again for another 2 mins.

I'm going to have to wait for the final version to really comment on it.

So Palutena and Ridley are neither 'good' nor relevant, mere garbage crowd-pleasers that cannot feasibly fit into Smash, yet Krystal is your number-one choice for inclusion?

I am sure it'll be a good party game with tons of welcome content. But I am also fairly sure that there is little to no competitive value for the game as it is right now. It'll be fun for maybe 4 months at most then people will move on instead of the game being played extensively for years past it's release day.

  1. DLC
  2. Amiibos
  3. Online multiplayer
  4. Competitive Brawl played for 2 - 3 years after release.
  • The game looks faster than Brawl.
Of course, we cannot make any predictions on how the game will progress competitively, but I think that it'll have much more replay value than Brawl or Melee.
