Importing parts of models to other models

I'm trying to copy Luigi's hat into Ganondorf's model. Is this even possible or stable? I'm going to assume this would be through hex editing, which I have tried, but I might be missing a few steps. Would I have to edit with the verticies or the verticies and the polygons? And btw, I was planning on replacing Luigi's hat with Ganon's "headpiece"; would it be better if I just added it...somehow?

EDIT: I figured that out, but is there anyway I could import the hat textures too? I tried editing Ganon's textures but it seems it doesn't cover all of it even when I color in the transparent spots. I was planning on getting rid of the cape, so could I just use that spot and somehow direct the hat to take the textures from that spot?

how did you figure this out? Getting Shadow's shoes from his AT trophy model over Sonic would be epic

aww I think it would only work if you the thing you are trying to replace has more vertices than the thing you're replacing it with because all I did has hex edited the vertices. but according to the people at (MeowMix), it's not possible to have a hack like this :(
for luigi's hat though, you can PSA hack it through the model of when kirby wears it, but I don't know how to do that
