Not really behind the times... A LOT of IDEs don't provide cross-compatability automatically between certain platforms (even ones being used professionally, such as Visual Studio's XNA w/ C#, which was a common IDE for 360 and PC games until it was shut down recently). That means they would have to manually port it, which takes time and money. Unless the devs want to use more money than they will make on the release, the port will come later if (and only if) the game is successful.

tl;dr: You're underestimating the amount of resources that are put into a port

To be fair, the port would actually be fairly easy. Rivals of Aether uses the free version of GameMaker Studio. The developer could port it in probably less than a week if they had the Profession version, which costs $150

In that case, it seems possible that they could make it happen in the future if they get enough money for it and the demand is strong enough.

It just really sucks. I know that Mac has a smaller user-base than Windows cause its top of the line and expensive but that doesn't mean I want to be left out of the fray on so many games.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that this happens. People say if you're into gaming, get a PC. Which is true, but that's only because devs are refusing to change. But I suppose it saves them some money in certain cases to just focus on one platform.

Although it is disappointing to know that the game isn't coming out for OS X, there is one alternative solution to the problem-- use Boot Camp. That way, you can have a Windows partition on your Mac, and play the game from there.

Devs have stated at one point that it will be released for Mac on launch (~6 months).
