I'm going to a tournament on Saturday and I was hoping to get some help.

I want to use Marth for this upcoming tournament, but there are a couple of concerns I have. This is the first tournament for Brawl that I'll be going to (I've been to quite a few for melee so I know the tournament atmosphere) and I was hoping that the community could tell me of anything that I need to be aware of when using Marth in tournament play.

This is a team tournament and my partner doesn't really take this seriously... So I need to be able to handle things myself. I'm either going to use Marth or Ike, but how well my character meshes with my partner's is important too; my partner will be using Samus. I'd like to use Marth, he's been my main since Melee, but I'm worried about how I'll be able to handle 2 vs 1 if it comes down to that. I'd say I'm pretty good with both Marth and Ike, but if possible I'd like to use Marth.

Are there any helpful tips you can give me? Any techniques I should be aware of? Will Marth do alright in competitive team play? Or should I go with Ike? I'd really appreciate any input.

In doubles play Marth has some good points:
In the fray of it all his shieldbreaker is really fantastic for freak outs.
Counter works similar too but is generally harder to get to.

As you're teaming with a Samus, in other words a projectiler; you'll be wanting to be rushing in and out of 'Samus' from front and behind while Samus is walling/protecting both of you with her projectiles and zair.
To continue on, you'll be wanting the Samus to make opportunities through her projectiles to get guaranteed hits or other things.

Some examples are:
Samus shoots fully charged ball, you're near an opponent, you spot dodge, they either get hit or they shield/roll and you punish them.
Samus spams zair, and Marth spams dtilt/ftilt while being close together; pretty much makes an unstoppable wall against anyone not using projectiles.

Yeah, everything Shaya says is true, in other words, Samus will bring your opponents to force a reaction to her projectiles. You react to what they do and quickly punish what they do. Like you could fair your opponent after they air dodge or poke them if they shield.

Thank you very much for your responses, I really appreciate your help. I'll be sure to pass that on to my partner. I can see how Shield Breaker would be an asset to team play.

Remember as well that Samus can tether-edgehog from a lowered, safer position while you edgeguard remaining foes. Don't know how often this team asset will be useful in the match though.

What's been said above is good advice!

Well ike has longer range. But yes, be marth if you can. I have found that Marth and Samus actually make a great team, if coordinated right. They're both pretty fast and can easily overwhelm an opponent team. And if your partner doesn't take this seriously then practice brawling with marth against two computer opponents. And also try practicing with your partner on a team battle to get the hang of how he plays so you can work off of his fighting. Good luck in the tourney.

Do what you can do to have friendlies matches with people there before hand.

Chances are as your first tournament you'll be mostly outclassed, but you never know.

I've been to several tournaments where its someones "first" and they get into the top 8 with ease. New style/blood always gives the potential to shine above most others.

I enjoy helping anyone who is as gracious and grammatically sound as yourself :)

Meet some nice people at the tournament and ask them to help you if there's something you don't get; but remember it's all about having fun.

Thanks for all of your help everyone. We ended up taking second place. One of the people in our first round was a Meta Knight; which was problematic. We lost that round, but won all of our matches after that one. We had to have a rematch against that team to determine who went to the final bracket and we won. After that my team had to play 5 consecutive rounds...and we lost our final match against a team of two Snakes.

My partner didn't follow through with the plans I came up with and played wildly as usual. >_> He died fairly early on against the two Snakes and I had to fight them myself. I almost pulled it off, I got both of them to above 120%, but couldn't land a decisive blow against either of them.

I was very pleased with my own performance though. We had quite a few matches against other Marths and I dominated them. After one of those matches, the Marth player asked which of us was Marth, complimented my playing and said he wanted to play me again another time. ^_^ So I was pretty happy about that! If it were a one on one tournament, I'm pretty confident that I would have won; but maybe another time.

Thanks a lot for your help everyone! I look forward to staying a part of the Smashboards Marth community!
