I'm just kinda curious to see how many of you guys play Ikaruga...it's kinda "underground," but everyone who has played it knows it pwns. :grin: If you don't have it, get it. Now.

Level four is a *****.

This is the greatest maniac shooter. Ever.

I have a copy for it on the Dreamcast, but I didn't get it till way after the life line. It's pretty awesome and it's insanely hard. D:

Or maybe I just suck at it.

@8-bit: It's not that you suck, you just haven't put 32498623 hours into it. x.x;
@Dodongo: Thanks. =P

If only it was marketed better. :(

I wouldn't say that... there are many more exciting/difficult shmups out there for those in the know. Most will agree that Ikaruga is a great shmup, but you'll find that most think of Radiant Silvergun (its predecessor) for the Saturn and Arcade as the better game of the two. It also depends on whether you want to expand the range to pure danmaku or some other shmup genre.

Looks like I'm going to have to go on ebay and nab this title. My Saturn is looking pretty lonely right now.

Good luck with that... Radiant Silvergun is one of the rarest/most sought titles for any videogame system. Prices will go well up past the $200 mark.

But if you're looking for other shmups to play in general, I have a bunch listed in "The Unofficial Shmup Thread" somewhere in this room. You may have to dig it up though.

I've been searching for a copy of Ikaruga (for GC) for so long but can't find one. Anybody know where I can look and not have to spend too much money on it?

This is by far one of the most sadistically difficult games I've ever played... >.< Great game, no question.
As I said before, Ikaruga is only mildly manic compared to a lot of other danmaku-style shmups. Look up Touhou videos on Youtube to see what I mean. Mushihime-sama is another one to look at for crazy bullet patterns.

I was thinking of getting this game from ebay or amazon, but most copies are very expensive... I'm thinking of making the two-hour trek to a gamestop that has a few copies in stock in NY state and save some money. I've wanted this game for so long.

LOL do it dude. on Amazon the cheapest one I think was 53 dollars and like I said mine was 65. eBay is just too gay to bother with like bidding and stuff unless you do a 'buy it now.' honestly though i'm VERY surprised to see that a gamestore would actually have a few used copies of it, but then again its in New York which is a much more populated/condense state than arizona (at least where I live)

I'm glad I bought this for GC the week it came out. Though . . . if I had waited a month it dropped to $20? What was up with that?

Oh well, sexy shmup. I can only one credit the game up until level 4-2. Never gotten further than that and I could only consistently get through the middle of 3. Now that I haven't played it in forever I probably would have trouble getting to 3.

holy ****ing **** this game is ****ing hard!
LOLOLOL

It's great though, try to practice chaining for combo scores. Generally focus more on living than killing stuff.

Especially learn the hitbox of your ship. The wings are not actually part of the hitbox, so you can get a lot closer to things than it looks like.

Playing it 2 player and not killing each other accidentally is really hard. (unless it's on easy I guess).

Ikaruga was not all that hard cause you can beat level one unlike those other gay, impossible-to-play Japanese shooters.

Level 4 is insane, haven't even dreamed of reaching 5 ><
And to who started this, Ikaruga is one of the best games in existance (Starcraft for the win, though), Maddox even gave it a thumbs up! Of course we all have it (but 9/10 of the forum users are afraid to admit they get their *** handed to them by the game).

Ikaruga rocks. I used to think it was the absolute hardest side scrolling shooter ever. I was wrong. Gradius V is a level of ridiculous no one could never imagine. If you have a PS2, i highly recommend getting it if you enjoyed Ikaruga.

Psyvariar 2 (any of its incarnations), Shikigami no Shiro II, Homura, Mushihime-sama, DoDonPachi Dai Oujou. All PS2 as well. Try those out, and see how your standards change.

Ikaruga is the only side scrolling shooter I've ever liked. I want it.
wouldn't Ikaruga be a vertical scrolling shooter? Also, who can chain the first level? I've gotten to around 60 ish before, but there's a part I can't combo.

OMG so there ARE shmup fans here in SWF!!

I loved Ikaruga. It is a fine example of why Treasure's still one of the finer game developers out there.

Shikigami no Shiro II on Extreme mode is torture.
Agreed. But it's soooooooo good.

Anyone here going to FC? If anyone who owns a game that makes gradius V look like a kids game, you should definitely bring it!
