Hey guys, I'm pretty new here, I've played Smash since 2007 with Melee, and when Brawl came out I fell in love :3
Now that we are close to the release of Super Smash Bros. 4 the YouTuber by the name of Naruteno3 posted http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLT7Vp2sbsg. This idea is pretty much what if you were Sakurai, what would your rosters be, starting from the original Super Smah Bros for the N64. Here are mine with explanations, feel free to critique and add your input, or post your own.

Super Smash Bros.

Removals
1) Jigglypuff - Putting Jigglypuff in the the first place was a pretty crazy idea, yes I know she in popular in the anime in Japan but there were so many other better choices. Charizard anyone?

2) Luigi - Luigi wasn't really the established character he is today. Having 2 to 4 Mario reps (depending on how you look at it) is too much for a tiny 12 man roster.

Additions
1) Pit - Pit was created in the same year as Link and Samus, I don't see how he was any less relevant. He would have been a great choice.

2) Marth - Marth first appeared in 1990, and the series was pretty relevant in the east. This would have been a great opportunity to increase popularity in the west.

Super Smash Bros. Melee

Additions
1,2,3,4) Peach/Bowser/Zelda (no Shiek)/Ganondorf - These four characters are all well known and unique to the previous roster. Peach and Zelda represent girls for Mario and The Legends of Zelda respectively, while Bowser and Ganondorf do the same thing but the represent villains.

5,6) King Dedede and Ridley - Both the Kirby and Metroid series needed another representative for being such big Nintendo franchises. What better way to represent with the main villains of the two series?

7) Diddy Kong - Diddy was getting really popular with the releases of DKC and DKC2.

8) Feraligatr - Might seem like an interesting pick for some, but to get rid of the need to cut characters, you add one from the next generation of Pokemon each game. Pikachu represents Gen I and the Electric type, while Feraligatr represents Gen II and the Water type. He could have a very interesting move set being a biped crocodile.

9) Ice Climbers - They are important characters but I think the N64's hardware could have made it hard to introduce a duo character. Plus they aren't as "important" per say as the original 12 I selected.

Removals
1,2,3,4,5,6,7) Dr. Mario, Falco, Luigi, Ganondorf, Young Link, Roy, Pichu - No need for clone characters, Mario didn't need five characters, Star Fox didn't really need two, Ganondorf wouldn't have to be a clone if they made him use a trident, and Zelda didn't need 4, Pokemon didn't need three, and fire emblem needed more but not yet, and Roy would lose relevancy in a couple of years.

8) Mewtwo - I wouldn't have added Mewtwo because Pikachu already filled the Gen I slot.

9) Game & Watch - I don't really feel his relevancy at that point, plus I've never played a G&W game (maybe that's why.)

10) Jigglypuff - Wouldn't have been in the the first place, Pikachu already filled the Gen I slot.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Additions
1) Luigi - Luigi is now more of an established character with the release of the Luigi's Mansion games and his move set should utilize the items from that series of games.

2) King K. Rool - The DK franchise needed a villain and the Tiki Men won't do. It would have made more sense to add Rool in Brawl before DK Tropical Freeze was reveled showing Rool once again not being in a DK game.

3) Meta Knight - Kirby needed a third rep and Meta Knight is a fine addition.

4) Wario - With the recent rise of the Wario games, it made sense to include Wario, good job Sakurai.

5) Impa - There was no need for Shiek in melee because she only appeared in one game. Impa appeared in games before Skyward Sword so she would have been a better choice than Shiek.

6) Samurai Goroh - F-Zero needed a rep in brawl because the relevancy for those games were (and still are) slowly dying. I think Samurai Goroh is a good choice because there isn't any other katana wielding characters at the time.

7 and 8) Sceptile and Infernape - These two starters represent Generations III and IIII while also representing Grass and Fire. This completes the basic starter pokemon element representation with out the need of the Pokemon Trainer. While also representing all four generations without cutting anyone.

9) Ike - Ike is representing Radiant Dawn(?), and he wouldn't have to be cut due to his unique heavy play style, unlike Roy.

10) Olimar - Olimar recently got really popular before Brawl and with Pikmin 3 the series is only getting more popular.

Removals
1) Lucas - Lucas isn't really needed, Ness is enough to support Mother.

2) Pokemon Trainer - Pokemon Trainer is a great idea, and I personally love him, but it adds three Gen I pokemon, which are cool (especially Charizard) but Pokemon doesnt need four Gen I reps.

3) R.O.B. - R.O.B. is awesome, but I think there are better characters. (Personal Opinion)

4) Toon Link - Zelda is fine with four, but Impa is a better choice.

Super Smash Bros. U

Additions
1) Blue Toad - With the recent popularity of NSMB, NSMBU and Mario 3D World, I think Blue Toad is a better choice than regular Toad. Plus he is blue so now we have Red, Green, Pink, Blue, Yellow, and Purple if that matters. :3

2) Waluigi - Waluigi could have a very different play style because of his long and lanky-ness (lol). He could carry a tennis racket for a primary weapon.

2.5) (Not Pictured) Daisy - Daisy could also make it in but she is too similar to Peach (Personal Opinion).

3) Ghirahim - Lord Ghirahim himself would make an excellent and unique character. Dual wielding blades and teleporting around would deffinitly be challenging to play against and fun to use.

4) Zero Suit Samus - Metroid needs another rep, and ZSS is a fine choice. Dark Samus is a possibility but she is too similar to Samus.

5) Zoroark - Zoroark would represent Gen V and Dark types. He has an interesting playstyle being able to copy the look of enemies.

6) Lucina - Lucina represents the mose recent FE game and would be a nice addition to the female roster.

7) Starfy - Starfy could be sized similar to Kirby and would be very interesting to play as, changing into his different forms (Narwhal/Fire Kangaroo, ect.) would be amazing.

8) Animal Crossing Villager - The AC Villager is an awesome choice, with unique moves, and it's a smart move to include him right after the release of New Leaf.

So that concludes my list, be sure to leave feedback or leave your own rosters! Can't wait!

Seeing as how you included my favorite starters from Gen 2, 3, and 4, you win!

I absolutely agree with your SBB roster! :D I think that's a pretty way to show more of Nintendo at the time to give a good idea on how their characters were varied at the time. It's just perfect.

I get what you're going for with Luigi, but waiting till Brawl to make him a character? Do you know how much anger at Melee there would have been for Luigi not making the cut? I can see him not making the first game, but he should have definitely been in Melee. Oh and don't cut Mewtwo!

Otherwise most of your cuts I surprisingly don't miss. Oh and Kudos for including K. Rool and Ridley early on.

Honestly, it sounds like you have some philosophical differences with Sakurai about what exactly smash brothers is. I think nowhere is this more apparent by your choice of Pokemon characters. Your approach seems like more of a scrapbook of Nintendo history with fighting involved to actually make it a game. Sakurai on the other hand seems to focus on its fighting game aspects first (ironic since he doesn't consider it a fighting game) and he uses even-ish franchise representation mostly because he wants a diverse cast.

Also Ridley. I don't think Sakurai cares about him, because I don't think Sakurai is inspired by what Ridley can do, and I don't think he is that concerned about making sure the Metroid franchise has at least 2 (or 3 if you count ZS as he probably does) reps.

I agree, my method of thinking for adding characters is:
1) They have to be unique in some way. (Bring something "new" to the table.)
2) No clones.
3) No cuts.
4) None are in for "nostalgia".
5) No third party.

So at the time of Melee Luigi would have been a clone or Mario. But at the time of Brawl he could (and should) have the abilities from Luigi's Mansion.

If I were Sakurai I would try to find a good compromise between Brawl's multiple air dodges and Melee's directional air dodge. I love dodging in the air multiple times, but I also love choosing to which direction my character dodges. Although I don't like falling in the air helplessly and more quickly from air dodging in Melee.

I would also make chibi robo and telly(robotic jigglypuff/ kirby clone hehe) playable characters, give ganondorf his own unique moveset, give ganondorf's current moveset to a villain from F-zero, resize Ridley and add him to the roster.

The answer is obvious - if I were Sakurai, the roster for each game would be unchanged. But I'll play.

I think the first order of business is considering the climate Smash 64 was born in. Nintendo was about to publish a Fire Emblem game on the Super Nintendo where western audiences had already moved on to the Nintendo 64, so I don't think the time was ripe for including Marth. As for Luigi, I sort of agree that he didn't have his own thing going at the time. For the the Mario games that he had appeared in up until the point (aside from Mario is Missing and the SMRPG manual), he was just an alternate skin Mario in the game. Since the series hadn't been solidified yet, I wouldn't use it as a platform to reboot interest in a franchise, so Pit wouldn't see it past the suggestion stages.

To push the game, they needed characters that were recognizable in both hemispheres, and Pokemon was everywhere. Jigglypuff is iconic and her similarity to Kirby would keep production time to a minimum, so I would keep her. Since Falco at the time was just as popular as Fox to western players and had the kind of edgy, post-apoco spunk that appealed to Japan as in other works like Akira, I would include him in Luigi's place.

As for Melee, I would exclude Dr. Mario and Pichu in favor of incorporating elements of Luigi's mansion into Luigi's style of play. Despite how similar the two are, I would keep Marth and Roy as is. I think they were both instrumental in making Fire Emblem popular and that neither could succeed in bringing it to the west by themselves. Western audiences needed to be impressed there was something bigger worth reaching into, and including just a single character would suggest the developers were struggling for ideas or that it was just a niche franchise.

For Brawl, I know that I would not have included Pokemon Trainer. I am not necessarily a fan of evenly representing franchises, but having six Pokemon is just overkill. I would cut back to the original two Pokemon inclusions, and then keep Mewtwo from Melee. If I had to add another Pokemon, it would be the anime Meowth. Toon Link would be excluded and I wouldn't lose any sleep. So with essentially three Pokemon cut as well as Toon Link, I would expand on Lucas' moveset and correct for Ness', adjust Ganondorf and give him a homing magic ball attack, and look really hard for another strong female character, even if that meant having to reach out for further third party inclusions like The Boss (MGS3). I think it is really important to start including female characters that are beyond archetypes such as being helpless or sexy-yet-deadly, which is why I am sort-of glad the Wii-Fit trainer is in the next game. I think to help this case and add some interest to the game in general, I would work with Retro developers and Nintendo into bringing to life a female Chozo warrior from their lore.

tl;dr:

Smash 64: - Luigi, + Falco
Melee: - Dr. Mario & Pichu, + Expanded moveset for Luigi
Brawl: - PKMN Trainer, Lucario & Toon Link, Keep Mewtwo, + anime Meowth (coin toss), + The Boss (MGS3), + Chozo Warrior, various brush-ups

Well Pokemon doesn't have any hero/villain characters per say, I think the franchise is big enough. That's five characters for pokemon, five for zelda, and Mario has a ridiculous amount of characters, those seem to be the top three characters.

Okay, I'll bite.

Smash 64:

The object here is simple. Fit all of the big name characters in. A roster of 15 (three larger than Smash 64s) captures close to all big name characters that existed at the time.

Reasoning:

The Super Mario Universe composes of the largest group on the roster, with four characters. I don't think this is a stretch at all, considering it's the face of Nintendo. If you walked up to someone on the street and told them "Hey, tell me a video game Nintendo makes", most would say Mario. Some might say Zelda or Pokemon, but most would say Mario. Peach and Bowser are both unlockables. Peach because her floating would be really unique and Bowser because he's Nintendo's big bad All-Star villain.

The Pokemon characters make up the next largest portion, with three characters. Pikachu is the mascot, and therefore obvious. Jigglypuff was really popular in Japan at the time due to the TV show, and she can be the joke character. Mewtwo was and still is one of the most popular Pokemon of all time. He's unlockable because Mewtwo is that final reward in Pokemon. You go through all that work, and Mewtwo is like a prize.

Star Fox and Kirby make up the next largest potions, with two each. StarFox and Kirby were two big names for the Nintendo 64, so I feel this is obvious. Wolf gets another villain in the game, and I think he'd be way more interesting than Falco. Dedede is another villain for the roster, and he's more prevalent through his franchise due to being in every game.

Every other series gets one. I considered giving Legend of Zelda two characters like Kirby and StarFox, but I think Ocarina of Time came too late into development to add Ganondorf or Sheik, and we've yet to really see what Zelda is capable of.

Melee:

Reasoning:
The project goal is slightly different here. Now that all of the big names are in, character emphasis is on completing the assortment of "characters who missed the boat", due to either not being as big a name or lack of potential in a fighting game.

Super Mario is unchanged. Toad is all but nostalgia shades at this point, and is difficult to work in with Peach existing, and Bowser Jr. is too new.

Diddy Kong joins Donkey Kong as a hopefully long awaited character, due to the massive success of the Country games and DK 64, not to mention his own spinoff.

Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask were both smashing successes, bumping up The Legend of Zelda to three characters. Zelda and Ganondorf are both the next important characters in line. Neither have anything to do with Majora's Mask, but the franchise as a whole demands both of these characters in. Zelda is now unlockable, due to the uniqueness of the transformation. Ganondorf is unlockable too.

Marth joins in Melee once more. Without Roy, it may be tougher for Fire Emblem to make an impact in the west, but it's certainly possible to do it. Making Marth a really interesting character would be a priority, and giving Fire Emblem more stuff, like trophies, music and a stage would help.

Ness is also here, due to HAL helping build Mother 3. Little bit of bias, but it works.

Captain Falcon rejoins here now too. He wasn't as big of a priority as the other characters I put in Smash 64, but he's an obvious inclusion this time around.

Ice Climbers are a retro character, and are unlockable due to their uniqueness. Same with Pit and his flight, and Mr. Game and Watch is unlockable once more.

Brawl:

Reasoning:
Realizing that the number of characters who missed the boat last time is small, the project goal for character selection was to include some fresh faces who simply didn't have the chance to exist in Melee, alongside anyone who missed the boat.

The release of Super Princess Peach gives Peach some new moveset material to work with, and giving her a weapon with an umbrella. With this, Peach's signature Vegetable move can be shifted to Toad. Toad can also grab bombs from Wario's Woods.

King K. Rool was an obvious choice for Brawl, so I put him in. DK may have been resting at around Brawl's development, but it's still a famous franchise as a whole.

Wario is obvious at this point. He's one of the few who missed the boat.

A decloned Toon Link shows off what Wind Waker is capable of, while also taking inspiration from the GBA games (the ones where Vaati exists).

Lucario shows up as a popular Pokemon with an interesting mechanic with his aura powers.

Ike is new Fire Emblem. Lucas is the new Mother character.

Villager, Olimar and Isaac show off three big Nintendo franchises who weren't around for Melee.

Takamaru and R.O.B are two retro characters with lots of moveset potential.

Still working on my Smash 4 one for this.

[collapse=64]I decided for the first installment to limit each series to one representative. Subbing out Jigglypuff and Luigi for Wario (Wario Land) and Marth [/collapse]

[collapse=Melee]For this installment I increase the reps. Mario receiving the standard 4, Donkey Kong receiving Diddy&Dixie, Star Fox receiving Falco, Kirby recieving King DDD, Ridley for Metriod, Zelda and Ganondorf, For Pokemon I opted for Meowth instead of Jigglypuiff seeing how Meowth is more of a frequent character in the anime than Jiggly and I also included Mewtwo fresh out of the pokemon movie. I also added Roy and 2 new series ice climbers and Mr. G&W. [/collapse]

[collapse=Brawl]For this sequel i introduced a couple of new characters Metaknight, Pit, Lil Mac, Olimar, Ike, Lucas, PT, Samurai Goroh and R.O.B. Lucario was also swapped with Mewtwo for his new movie. I also introduced for the first time ever 3rd party characters. Sonic and Snake [/collapse]

You don't want Sheik because she was in only one game but still you include Ghirahim, great logic. No offense, but I prefer the real rosters.

Ghirahim has only been in one game, but he was in the latest Zelda and hasn't had a chance to appear in another yet. Considering the Zelda content in each SSB is centric towards the latest Zelda titles, I don't think it's completely out of the question.

There is a huge difference between giving characters there most up to date look and including a character who has no real relevance to a series. Sure Ghirahim might have relevance later, but at the moment he really doesn't have much. If he does get some later that would make him a perfect candidate for the next smash game, but not this one. As for Sheik, Zelda has only appeared in her Sheik form in one game. However, Sheik is not a character so much as a disguise for Zelda. She's just another form of her, and Zelda will always be relevant to her own series. Sure one of her moves (the Sheik transformation) happens to have less relevance now, but so does Peach's Turnip attack. Moves don't have to be relevant. Even transformation moves.

This is true but, Sheik was trained by Impa, she was in multiple games including the most recent one, Skyward Sword. So there is no point having Sheik because we have Impa, which plays nearly identical. Ghirahim is would offer a completely different move set than anything we have today.

See now this just isn't fair. We have to bare context in mind. You would really go through the effort of putting 18 characters in a game you're not even sure people will like? That means you somehow magically got 50% more budget and time. As for Melee Sakurai only had what like 14 months? The only reason he was even able to put in 25 characters is because of the 5 clones. And as for Brawl, 49 characters?! It would be extreme optimism on my part to believe we will get that many this time.

Luigi, Wario, and Ganondorf weren't even fully established at that time.
and "Ness represents EarthBound and the upcoming EarthBound 64" - Sakurai can't tell the future?

Sorry... I misunderstood the concept. I thought that the idea was if you were Sakurai, what would the rosters be for the games? I never really thought I had to factor in the development time and such... I wasn't trying to anger anybody.

I wasn't commenting on Sheik's relevance, only Ghirahim's, but in my honest opinion Impa isn't too horrible a choice. Her reincarnations played integral roles in many of the Zelda games, and then she became one of the main characters in SS. If Sheik were to be removed from Zelda then Impa is perfectly deserving to become a playable character in order to preserve Sheik's style. Now that I think about it I really like that idea.

Hell, Impa is far more deserving than Ghirahim.

If Impa gets in I wont be able to play with a serious face anymore due to the CDI's. Ganon being a joke in Brawl wasnt enough to tip me yet.

Ghirahim might have relevance later, but at the moment he really doesn't have much.
I think Ghirahim has some significant relevance to the series, but only in a very indirect kind of way. On top of being a great personality, he a catalyst that helped give shape to what the series as a whole is, even if he cannot take most of the credit. He definitely has more relevance than Agahnim or Zant, who appear after the timeline diversions. My only complaint is trying to make him work in Smash Bros. without making him seem like a vanilla sword fighter (in spite of his personality), spoiling the game, or making him unrecognizable. Including Ghirahim would also run head-to-head with struggling to make The Imprisoned work during the planning stages.

Maybe what you mean is that he hasn't had a real spotlight, which I am inclined to agree to...

Two things as an aside, it bothers me how Ghirahim's smirk reminds me so much of Janus/Magus. Second, for the next entry I would focus on representing the Zelda characters in terms of the greater spirits that each of them are, such as The Hero of Time and so forth, drawing heavily from Skyward Sword. I think it would open up the chance to make a more solid canonical appearance while still allowing them variations in future incarnations.

Sorry... I misunderstood the concept. I thought that the idea was if you were Sakurai, what would the rosters be for the games? I never really thought I had to factor in the development time and such... I wasn't trying to anger anybody.
No anger. It's possible I misunderstood the concept. I'm just saying if we don't bare such constraints in mind, what exactly are we basing our characters off of from game to game? What's to stop us from putting our dream roster save for a few people who didn't exist yet in the very first Smash Brothers?

If any of you we're Sakurai, you would do the exact same thing because you are Sakurai and this is what Sakurai does.
If any of you were the director behind Smash, given Nintendo picked you, then you would make nearly all the same decisions that Sakurai makes.
But if we throw all that out of the window, then any normal game director may as well end up making Smash a less decent game, much like Playstation All Stars.

Saying "what if I were Sakurai" is like saying "what if I was a multi-millionaire movie director"

Fair enough. I might have mispoke. Or maybe not. He has more relevance to the plot, but I don't know if that makes him relevant to the series necessarily if that makes any sense. He seemed like someone who was needed to get the plot of Skyward Sword moving and it just so happened that the plot of that game is relevant to the plot of the rest of the games. Basically yes spotlight is what it comes down to, but I think a case for calling that relevance to the series can be made. Regardless I agree he is more important than Agahnim and Zant.

As for having an interesting moveset, it is there that I am actually somewhat inclined to disagree. I saw a moveset for him that seemed both believable and interesting. I think it was on the Ghirahim thread actually. Oh wait, you said something about spoiling the game... uh this moveset might do that... I don't actually remember.
