I just bought my copy of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. I was so excited, I wanted to play as Palutena and Robin so badly, I couldn't wait. I started up the game and went right into an online match. I saw the starting roster, and I froze. No Palutena or Robin. The game chose a character for me after I ran out of time to choose. The other person beat me effortlessly, I couldn't move. After the match, I closed my 3DS, put my head in my hands, and cried myself to sleep. The next day, I gave my 3DS and Wii U to my nephew. Never again did I ever play Super Smash Bros.

(I know you won't actually sell your 3DS, I'm just making a fun story out of it. At least... I hope you don't sell your 3DS and/or Wii U just because of a starting roster.)

So do I, I think Lucario will be moved to a starting character, with Greninja and Jigglypuff (and a potential sixth Pokemon) as unlockable.

As for Palutena, I can't see her a starting character.

I'm not sure. I think she will, but there is a slight possibility she'll be unlockable. I think Ganondorf and Toon Link will be the unlockables again.

Except Sakurai said that he was only showing Luigi because of the Year of Luigi.

He didn't really put it like that at all. He said Luigi had always been a secret character and never shown before release, but he doesn't see why that should continue. He then said that it's the year of Luigi. To me, his statement if anything are further reason to believe Luigi will be a starter, and it kinda reminds me about that time before Brawl's release when Sakurai pretty much confirmed Ness on Lucas's page and people for some strange reason thought it was being suggested Ness was not returning. It's truly not a big deal which characters are starters, and I still hold out a bit for a big blowout in a late direct showing us everyone and having no unlockable characters at all, but I'm fairly confident that we're not seeing a random assortment of starters and unlockables pre-release.

Hm, I'd find it neat if we'd start with SSB64's starter roster.

That could be some interesting addition by subtraction. Starting with a small roster, and unlocking a huge roster as you play the game. There's just something satisfying in hearing that "Challenger Approaching" theme, and then ultimately defeating the character.

Idk I felt like Meta Knight always should have been unlockable.
He has a sense of mystery about him, so he should show up unexpectedly instead of being there from the start.
And I'm willing to bet my future on Sakurai feeling the same way.

Ike was tricky.
Marth is 100% guaranteed starter at this point. He's on the cover, he has an Amiibo already being showcased with the likes of Mario, Pikachu, etc. and he is the face of Fire Emblem.
With Marth as a starter, there needs to be one more Fire Emblem rep.
I feel that Robin goes with Marth the best and helps represent the Fire Emblem series better than two swordsman would.
And he offers a new recognizable face to an existing franchise (the reasons why Greninja and Palutena are starters in my mind)
And with Ike getting his new buffed up appearance, he looks like a brand new character, so instead of having 3 Fire Emblem reps from the start he is the best option to be hidden with Lucina.

I think Marth is only gonna be starter for the 3ds version.
