Why would you do this to yourself? Just asking...

Doubt VERY HIGHLY we'd see Palutena as a starter and Pit as the unlockable KI character. But hey, if this is the starting roster then... kudos? :)

NVM just saw Pit. Still doubt both are starters, though.

Palutena as a starter? lol ok.

Also I guarantee both will have there own unique starters/unlocks.

Gettin' a bit worked up over a starting roster when the end roster is all that matters.

Looks plausible, why would Ike and Meta Knight be unlockable though?
Idk I felt like Meta Knight always should have been unlockable.
He has a sense of mystery about him, so he should show up unexpectedly instead of being there from the start.
And I'm willing to bet my future on Sakurai feeling the same way.

Ike was tricky.
Marth is 100% guaranteed starter at this point. He's on the cover, he has an Amiibo already being showcased with the likes of Mario, Pikachu, etc. and he is the face of Fire Emblem.
With Marth as a starter, there needs to be one more Fire Emblem rep.
I feel that Robin goes with Marth the best and helps represent the Fire Emblem series better than two swordsman would.
And he offers a new recognizable face to an existing franchise (the reasons why Greninja and Palutena are starters in my mind)
And with Ike getting his new buffed up appearance, he looks like a brand new character, so instead of having 3 Fire Emblem reps from the start he is the best option to be hidden with Lucina.

Did you laugh at Brawl's starting roster when Sakurai brought in two brand new characters of his own series to join Kirby?
I did actually. but one's a king & the other is a warrior. Palutena is a goddess. I can accept MK & DDD being starters, but a goddess? naw son, I wanna work to unlock that.

I'm nearly entirely certain that every first party character who is unveiled before release will be a starter and that, therefore, your list is completely wrong. It makes no real marketing sense for it to be anything different; why would Sakurai needlessly annoy players by advertising the playability of some character like Luigi and then withholding?

Because Luigi has been a secret character all his Smash Bros. career.
And marketing the characters like this makes complete sense.
Mario Kart 8 showed off the Koopalings as a major marketing selling point, but they weren't there from the start.
These people all know their favourite characters are in the game already, so they aren't going to boycott it just because they aren't starters.
They'll boot up the game and say "aw no Mega Man? alright how do I unlock him"

Haha but why sell your systems? Everyone can be unlocked so you'll have everyone eventually anyway. Isn't unlocking part of the fun?

But this is a joke tho right....?

I wouldn't be surprised if all the characters on the website are starters, except for Luigi and the third-parties. It was the same way with Brawl, even when people thought that certain characters like Pokemon Trainer HAD to be unlockable. Though I can see Lucario, Toon Link, and Captain Falcon being unlockable again.

Sakurai releasing Luigi early opened the flood gates for secret characters being revealed on the website.

The pattern I've suggested holds too. Before Melee's release, we saw exactly 14 characters; it was the exact set of starters. Before Brawl's release, we saw precisely the starting roster + Snake/Sonic, and actually even Snake and Sonic being unlockable got a lot of complaints. Characters have switched status before; Ness and Captain Falcon were Melee starters and Brawl unlocks. I see no real reason Luigi can't switch too especially since Luigi's importance in the Nintendo universe has risen greatly in recent years.

Mario Kart 8 revealed the entire roster before launch and generally uses a very different marketing strategy than smash. I do suppose that what you're saying would make sense if smash did the same (even still though, a smash character is a much bigger deal than a Mario Kart character and carries a lot more emotional attachment and hence perceived player need to play as a character ASAP), but if smash intended to show everyone pre-release, I'm not sure how we explain G&W not being officially added to the site. If we see only some of the characters, it wouldn't really make sense to show just some of the unlockables. No matter how I look at it, I'd be pretty surprised to see a lot of the currently known first party characters as unlockables when the game drops.

Why do people even care about what the starting roster is?

I mean, I get being curious to know what it is, but it's not something that really needs serious speculation or anything.

Ideally, I might like my mains to be starters but that really isn't a big deal, I'll be unlocking everyone ASAP regardless.

And it's certainly not something that should provoke you to sell the system the game will be on. Like, geez.

Except Sakurai said that he was only showing Luigi because of the Year of Luigi.

You really think marth is a likely starter over Lucina aka marth's training wheels

Marth being on the cover of the game and having an Amiibo out already with Mario, Link, etc.
So yes I believe Marth won't have his training wheels to start.
