Idea for Smashfests

Since the drive for breast cancer did so well and brought about the really awesome (and how we should function) #oneunit, I thought of a smashfest idea. I got a lot of positive feedback (though many were casuals). The basic idea was, there is not a huge community around, and we should play some Smash. We got copies of Smash64, Melee, and Brawl, along with CRTs. The format of the tournament was this:

At the beginning of the tournament, all players choose their favorite game.
All sets are Bo3.
After brackets are set up, if both players have the same favorite game, its a simple Bo3 set on that game.
If the favorites are different, game one is played on Player 1's favorite game, game two is on Player 2's favorite game, and if a game three is necessary, play game three on the third game.
Items are off.
Legal stage set are the USA tournament legal stages for each game.
Gentleman's clause of course.
We didn't have to worry about it, but wobbling would be illegal (because it isn't all Melee players), and stall tactics are grounds for DQing that game.
Player 2 picks the stage for Player 1's game.
Player 1 picks the stage for Player 2's game.
Rock, Paper, Scissors determines who gets stage choice for game 3 (or just go random).

For example, Alex chooses Smash64 as his favorite, and Kyle chooses Brawl as his favorite game.

Alex wins on 64 (Kyle picked the stage). Kyle wins on Brawl (Alex picked the stage).
So Melee decides the winner of the set.

Anyways, it was fun and really promotes bringing the community together, because all of the games are fun, and all of the games are good and super different. At least, I love all of the games. The rules could be more comprehensive, but I just kinda thought of it soon.

This sounds pretty neat. Not often you see a format that emphasizes cross-gaming within the smash community, and sounds like it'd be an interesting way to for people to get together that otherwise wouldn't.

That being said, Mew2king would dominate in this format.

Yeah that is true. But I feel like it may be the easiest way to expand our community as a whole, since new people will generally get wrecked and maybe turned off, but with a format like this, being wrecked will happen less frequently or at least probably won't happen in each game played. That may cause for a better opportunity to teach a new player the game they want to learn (meaning it'd be favorable to have someone who specializes in each game around) if they want to stick around or play friendlies to learn.

What 64 or Melee player wants a set determined by a barlw match? At least do P:M instead. Then this idea would be pretty cool. You could do bo5s and add in other games too, like Mario Kart, SA2:B, RPS, Tic Tac Toe, or pretty much anything other than barlw.

It is more for fun than anything man. I think Brawl is a fine game in the series for people to enjoy. Like I said, it is to expand the Smash community as a whole, and as much as I would rather play Melee all day, why shouldn't we help out the 64 AND Brawl communities? Besides, in an area without many Smash players at all, this is much better than getting wrecked. I don't see why we couldn't add some of the games you stated, but I also don't understand why you would want to do it at the expense of Brawl. Is Brawl worse than Melee and 64 in my opinion? Yes. Would I want a set to come down to Brawl? No. But Brawl is still in the Smash series. I find it hard to believe that you can't find a way to have fun with it.

Well, its more people don't understand that Melee is better in every way so when I beat them at their own game they act like trying harder will help them. I don't know, people around here have too much pride.

Bone,he's trying to do something to help everyone here. suggest P:M if you must, but he's not gonna pretend Brawl never existed just because of some....."technical difficulties" it had.

The biggest challenge you're going to face is having enough consoles to run the tournament. Seems like some people would enjoy it (i'm with bones though, I personally wouldn't).

Personally I wouldn't participate...just TO XD. I don't enjoy Brawl, but I don't think promoting a fan-made game will help the community as much as promoting Brawl honestly.

I've had ideas like this before. What if you were to setup a script or something that would continuously make new random brackets with all the players names at the fest every time a tournament is over it makes a new one. This way everybody gets an even amount of varied experience with and against different characters.

One could even go as far as having tasks to complete and points to be awarded, pretty much a skinner box system. You could use this to get people to play more of a specific character so that the community can learn to deal with a set problem.
