I suck

So I really suck at smash. I simply do not have the skill to position myself into where I need to be to do things. I watch tutorials online for characters and try to copy their combos and such but when its time to do it in the game I simply cant pull these off. Trying to get in for throws is hard and even trying to catch someone to actually hit the. I usually spend the entire match getting hit back and forth like a ping pong ball. What would people suggest for learning how to get in on people?

Add me on Discord, my username is MangoPeachey#1657. We can chat and play some friendlies while I teach you some simple characters. I'm not a god at Smash or anything, but I consider myself decent enough to help a newbie.

Also, maybe use fast aerial normals and projectiles to help you get close enough to get the grab you seek.

My suggestion would be to stop trying to copy people before learning any fundamentals. Try to figure out how to win neutral in your own way before doing anything advanced. Then take time to think about what works, and what doesn't work on your opponent. Remove the ineffective habits from your gameplan, and try again.

It will take time, but you will have a much stronger foundation to build upon when you figure things out on your own. Only after you build up some fundamentals will emulating character specific tutorials or tournament matches help you.

Would you still be willing to help a newbie? I am new to the franchise and have been playing for about 2 months. I would really benefit from learning from a more experienced player. I don't really have any friends that play too seriously and when I play online I get obliterated. Haha

I'm not sure if you're using online as your main place to train, but the input and overall lag probably doesn't help matters with you trying to set up those combos you've watched. I know my fighter has often registered a certain button or attack I never selected because the lag failed to recognize an earlier command.

If you have as many problems with this game's online as you claim to, it's on your end. I'm doing fine there and it's beyond adequate for a person at the OP's level.

I usually use the likes of Kirby but Ill also use king dedede and shulk. With kirby i can beat level 9 AIs just fine. And i dont even use most of the combos I see.

Don't fight computers if you're serious about being decent at SSBU. Humans learn, AIs don't.

I've had matches that went flawlessly, but have also ran into matches with delay, whether severe or small. I was just suggesting that him trying to combo flawlessly when he is just learning could trip him up if there is some sort of input delay. I never said it happened all the time.
