I still don't have a definitive main, lol!

I was wondering if any of you guys are trying to figure out your definitive main is. Like if you were going to a tournament, who would you choose? My problem is that I love many of these fighters even still!

My very favorites to use are (no particular order):



And these are my sub-favorites:



I've been doing an exhausting project where I fight every character WITH every character; got a fancy excel sheet and everything, lol!

Now there are a couple that stand out a little; that being who I've always used since 64, I've always liked in brawl, but she lacked the power, who I've loved in Brawl, who I've always liked since 64 as well, and finally , who seems to feel amazing!

But they are pretty much neck and neck with the others I listed.

Are any of you guys trying g to figure out your 'definitive' mains?

I stopped trying to find my definitive main. Although you can consider my mains to be , , , , and , I can use just about every character due to the fact that I attempted to main everyone back in Brawl (very tiresome and ambitious if you ask me).

Idk, I'm probably best with Mega Man. When it comes down to a tourney, I'm not sure if I'd go with Sheik instead just to be safe.

But how safe is safe? I still think I'm best with Mega Man so shouldn't I pick him instead? I might.

There's something about the whole "tourney" thing that's lodged in my mindset, that people play too aggro and fast that makes me question Mega Man. Then again, he's a beast

I still don't have a main either. So many likable characters to choose from. I like all of those characters:



With the exception of Ness, I like their games as well (never played Mother 2).

Actually, this thread already helped me a bit. I originally listed almost the double of the characters above, but looking at some of them, they just didn't feel like they belong in that list, you know? Sheik, Robin, Shulk, Pit are all nice characters, but I don't think they would represent me well. I think lol.

Still, 12 characters is a lot. I really need to trim that list down to 2~3 at most, but I don't know how.

I have almost the same problem. I just alternate whoever I use almost every match

Even though I know Sonic and Lucina are my best characters

I used to be a Junior main but I am now a shiek main. I just keep second guessing myself

Well the game's still pretty new so being in the experimentation stage isn't that bad. Also I know what you mean about having favorites you can't put down. Granted I DID eventually stick to just three mains, getting to that point from my initial list was a nightmare.

For reference here's a list of characters I would main until I got to my current point. Only current is mains in order, the preceding lists are when I added them to the list:

Although I feel like I should add more to this list of mine, even though 3 is enough for now. I still have these guys that I also really want to learn.

Every character in this game has weaknesses and strengths. Before picking a main, you should focus on improving your own ability--walking spacing, mixing up your landings, getting up from the ledge, capitalizing on advantageous situations, etc. Then, and only then, should you pick a character to main and figure out more in depth. Assuming that you want to be competitive, that is. If not, then have at it! Smash is fun, so play as many characters as you like.

Choose a couple of different styles. I for example have Ike for power, Rosalina for speed and technique, and Link for projectiles and clever combos. And remember, it's just a game, don't take it too seriously, you don't want this to feel like a chore.

This exactly. Don't overthink things too much, picking your mains according to "categories" like strength, speed, etc is actually a pretty good approach.

After weeks of experimenting, I shrunk my mains down to 4:

for his unique projectile/item game
for the streingth
for style and
for a well-rounded fighter

Like other said, having different mains with different play styles is good.
I also recommend you, if you want to main a clone, try to also main the original character. It can be useful sometimes to switch from clones to original, because they same moves but not the same gameplay.

For example :
is my main. He's slow but hits hard and got a crappy recovery. If I have a bad matchup with someone, I can use someone else. In that case, I'm going to use , the original one.

It's simple, but it works fine.

Lately I've been debating between and . For now, I'm definitely better as Mario, but I also want to check out Ness. He's def improved from Brawl, so I wanna check out my favorite Earthbound series character. I still lean towards Mario, since Mario better fits my play-style, since I prefer faster characters that are still easy to control and have decent combos.

is the closest thing I have to a definitive main. However, I also consider mains of mine. I find all of the characters in this game super charming and I love playing with them all! (except but that's a personal thing)
