Hey guys, SOLID here.
As many of you probably know, I'm an avid Lupe Fiasco fan. He's my favorite rapper for a number of reasons. The main ones being that his lyrics have meaning and sound good at the same time, and also that he doesn't go along with what all of the popular rappers nowadays do, i.e. he doesn't use voiceboxing or rap about sex, money, and all that other materialistic crap that you'd hear if you listened to Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, etc.
Now Lupe has a new album coming out, called We Are Lasers or just Lasers for short. It's coming out December 29th. I've been checking out his new songs, and yesterday I downloaded his most widely circulated song from the new album, entitled "Shining Down." Lupe sings this along with Matthew Santos, another artist signed to the First and Fifteenth label. I was listening to the beginning, the part where Matthew Santos is singing, and I thought to myself "This is good so far, Lupe's part must be great!" So Lupe's first verse comes, and it's pretty catchy, and I liked it. The chorus is sung, and then Lupe gets into his second verse, and about 20 seconds into it I heard something that surprised me. It sounded like Lupe was voiceoxing, and I think he was. I don't know why he would do this. One of the reasons I respected him so much was because he didn't follow the crowd, and paved his own way.
Now I really hope that he isn't going to ruin himself like Kanye West did with this, and that it was more mocking others who used this than anything else. If this is really his new style then he's ruining a great voice and a great style. He just doesn't seem like someone who would really do this, and I hope he sticks to his old formula and doesn't go down this road.
