I need help with my connection

I live in Australia

I want to play people in America with no lag, however this is like... impossible using wifi (which is what I use)

would an ethernet cable or whatever they are solve the problem? Or do both people need that for it to be lagless? I have a feeling distance is the main reason

As you said, distance is the main reason. You can get an ethernet cable and it will help somewhat but the lag will remain. Communication between two people has more latency the greater the distance. I'm in the US and want to play people from Australia
