Hi Everyone :colorful:

All right so I need a bit of help from a few people here. The question I'm going to ask is extremely subjective and could be talked about for ages. It's an incredibly tough question to answer in a few sentences, but I can't use a whole page of someone else's work :p

So, the question I am posing is "What do you think love is?" This more gunned toward the philosophical ideas of love than the biological.

Please note that if I choose to use one, I'd have to use your name since the quote will need to be cited.

Thanks everyone :)

Strangely enough I just had this discussion the other day in one of my classes. The conclusion that I'm sticking to is that it's not what it's cut out to be.

There is no whole, predetermined fate or things of that nature. Love is in fact a chemical reaction, just the brains way of saying that it's a good person. If love at first sight is possible, meaning you love someone for no apparent reason at the time, that means that falling out of love should be an equal possibility. Which draws to the conclusion that love although convincing, and it may mean something special to the person who is in love, which in most cases it does, is only a feeling.

The example I'm going to use may seem a little strange but it gets the job done. There is a type of bacteria that can control everything that the host thinks and does, although it does not apply to humans, it applies to ants, it shows that with just a few different chemicals here and there you could change your opinion about someone, or in the case of Resident Evil, want to eat brains.

All in all, its not about destiny, its not about finding the perfect person, its just a chemical reaction.

If you decide yo use this, go ahead and take what part of the paragraphs you want. We can deal with the citations if you decide to use it.

Kigbariom is right when it comes to the biological side.

Now then, let me see. We seem to have a lot of philosophers here on SWF who would love to jump on debate away.

In reality though, let me give you my philosophical answer. There is no answer to this question. Love cannot be described, it is a different sensation to everyone else. This question has no answer, and thus any effort spent trying to answer it is nothing but a fruitless waste of time.

Who cares what love is? What difference does it make?

If you're in love, there is a 50% chance of being immobilized. Don't worry, it usually goes away after 2-5 days...
Biochemically, being in love is no different that consuming large amounts of chocolate. -DA

I'm not trying to start a debate I'm really just trying to gauge others for a paper.

This is something I typed up for an asexual person in the LGBT thread:

Love is incredibly difficult to describe. It's like asking what red looks like.

That said, love definitely includes a component of dependence. I feel like I need to be around the person I love or I'll be very depressed and lonely. That's why breakups are often extremely taxing. Generally, for me, love only occurs for one person at a time, although lust can occur for an infinite number of people. I think most single people have a bedtime rolodex, if you catch my drift. Because of this dependence, love causes people to preserve the well-being of the object of their love, hoping that this will in turn make the object stay with them. Love also causes a "floaty" feeling in that all vulontary tasks other than tending to the object of your love fall to the back burner. In extreme cases, it's as though you are in a separate place in time in which exams, food, sleep, chores, bills, etc... simply do not matter or exist. The only goal is to stay with the person. Faults are ignored, and minor achievements are elevated, making the object seem like a better person than he/she actually is in the lovers' eyes.

"Love" is unconditional, undying, and spiritual. Love isn't love unless it is true, and it is true when those three things are applied to it.

The term "love" is misused in many ways. People show affection for materials and celebrities. In other words, they "love" things that do not or cannot love them back. Love is showing that you will honestly do anything for the one you are showing that love to, whether it is a friend, relative, and even a pet.

Love can also be religious. Jesus Christ made the ultimate sacrifice for the remission of all our sins. He had to endure pain and suffering, for everyone, even if they didn't care. Of course, there can only be ONE holy love, and that's the love of God. God isn't human; He can even love those who will not love Him back. Love comes from God. Take note that this is only from a religious perspective.

That is what makes love unconditional. There is no regret in doing so, though there may be hesitation and reluctance, but that is human nature.
