haha is sort of like a lol, you aren't dying of laughter, you just thought it was sort of funny.

hahaha is typically sarcastic, think of it like "Hah-hah-hah, very funny."

Of course, these two are mixed up all the time, and anything above 3 ha's is too hard to understand, so it's always easier to go with a nice short hehe.

Hehe is typically more mischievious though, so it's a tough call.
