I am getting hues net( satelite internet) and was wondering if it will allow me to play SSBB online, also I have bought a Nintendo wi-fi USB connector and was wondering if it will work with hues net when I upgrade it from dial up.

Satellite internet has a huge latency associated with it. Theres no way you could play smash or any other game for that matter, even with people very close to you. Even dial-up may be better, but then you risk bandwidth issues and packet loss. Are there really places where you cant get some type of broadband these days?

Yes, and those of us who live in those areas will take whatever we can get. Even sattilite.
QFT..

If it's true that there is no way you can play SSBB online with satelite then I am one sad panda.:(

also is wildblue any better

so would having satelite internet be better then staying with dial up?

Also how much lag will it have trying to play a fighting game or to download updates to the console.

I'm in the same situation as you. I tried using my router with my Dad's laptop's satellite card... = epic fail. The connection goes in and out so much....

You probably already know this but you can play some games with dial-up. My friend would say all but only about 70% of games. I don't know how well Brawl would play on it; probably best with a friend 1 on 1.

Cuz I tried playing Mario Strikers Charged Football online and it's not anything like the other games is actually freezes so it's like stop-go-stop--go-go-stop-go. Really annoying. Basically all the others I have (MKDS, Pokemon, Diddy Kong Racing [that one is awesome] Pokemon Wii) work great online through this.

Probably the one thing pushing it to the absolute (playable) extreme is Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron for PSP and being in a room with 15 other people. I try to stay away from things like that but it can fill up fast. Sometimes it's still surprisingly playable, too. I was once 248 on the online leaderboard before my router messed up on me. Then I plummeted.

If you want to see if you can get all that working for you (if you haven't already) go here:

Nick's Wifi With Dial-Up Tutorial

This is the same guy who helped me.

Note again from my own experiences it's best to have at LEATS 36KBPS connection before attempting to play online.

Now, let the flaming begin. :(
But it's funny how I've played with people before and then told them afterwards and they were like "...whoa. I didn't think that was possible" and then play with me over and over again.

It works pretty good dial-up on dial-up too, as I played Clubhouse Games with someone just last week and had alot of fun and it was fast, too. No lag or disconnections whatsoever.

But again, I have no idea how all of this will work with Brawl. I hope it's like every other game I have except for Strikers. :(
And Strikers is really fun, too.....
And I'm really good, too. XD

I can't get DSL because I live on a mountain. People who have DSL complain their stupid arguement of how DSL is everywhere now; well, it's not at all. I've met hundreds of people who still have dial-up and can't get DSL.
If I could, I would.

And I also got the Wii Shop to working and although it can take a few tries sometimes to break into it (lol) once I'm there it's fast. Depending on your connection speed, for me, it was 10 Minutes = 20 Blocks.

So download The Lost Levels took approximately 15 minutes. :)

I guess it might be but I'm always getting frustrated when it sorta just cuts me off by going dormant. And I haven't been able to play any Wifi games at all on this thing. So it's your choice. It might be alot better for you where you live.

edit: it's giving me a horrendous time right now though, this satellite thing. >_> Ugh!

We just had a thread on this about lag. Use the search feature.

Speed nothing to do with latency. After about 128kbps upload, speed won't matter. Having a 3mbps/1mbps with high latency (like satellite) connection or 128kbps/128kbps SDSL, the SDSL will have less lag.
Sure you can upload 10megabits at a per second, but it takes 2 seconds to finally start the transfer.

Picture it like this. You have a set of 10 trucks that carry 10tons. You have a set high performance formula 1 cars that can only carry 1/10th of a ton. You need to get a location 10 miles away. Your high performance formula 1 car can get to it in 2 minutes. Your truck takes 10 minutes. Sure the truck can carry more per transfer but there's a large delay between receiving. In the time it takes 1 truck to get to the destination and back, you can send 5 cars to and from. Now of course, if you need to carry over large packages (10tons), it's great, get a bunch of trucks, but if you just need to carry small packages (1/10ton) on ever trip, use the small cars.

Small Cars = Low Latency, 128kbps
Large Trucks = High Latency, 1mbps
packages = packets

And for smash, over Wifi, you can expect packets to be smaller than 2kilobytes, yes that small. The speed of your internet won't matter as much as your latency.

*I'm not saying high speed has to have high latency (like slow trucks), but i'm using this as an example to what what is more practical when you're considering small packets throughput like sychronizing game data over the internet. in this case, low latency is better than high bandwidth

To answer your question, satellite may have high bandwidth but there is a significant lag when receiving and sending data to and from OUTER SPACE!

I think I remember Nintendo stating Satellite connection won't work with Nintendo WiFi, but I'm not sure if that meant the actual WiFi, or just Nintendo's USB WiFi connector

Have you heard of EVDO? The coverage is pretty widespread and it's cheaper and better than satellite. We used it for several months (from a company called Millenicom) and were very satisfied.

Edit: Nevermind, looking into it a little more it looks like satellite connections still just don't have the capacity for reasonably low latency. In other words, your ping will be incredibly high in any game, actually worse than dial-up. For browsing the internet satellite will certainly be faster, but it doesn't do games.

Bluewave, hughesnet, directway, netzero, and all other Sattelite connections will have too high of latency to play Brawl or most other online games.

Average Dial up ping 300
Average Sattelite ping 1000
Average DSL/Cable ping 75

Sattelite is only good for fast downloads. Sure, they can download at 1mbps, but it will still take a few seoncds before the download starts. If you would try to play brawl and started a match, you would punch, only to lag and punch 1-3 seconds later.

Sattelite is NOT recommended for brawl at all. Period.

try www.dslreports.com or www.speakeasy.net or something to check for an alternative.

BTW, All land line phone lines have to be set to digital signal (digital subscriber lines, DSL) by 2009. So you just may have to wait anyoher year or 2 =(.

don't bother with EVDO. It's a CDMA 3G technlogy. It's cellphone frequencies really. (3GPP2 Project)
I know that sounded like gibberish, but it runs wirelessly and will also have lag. 100ms-150ms is IDEAL lag on an EVDO network which is not ideal for gaming

Stick with dial-up, dsl or cable. avoid wireless. again more speed does not mean less latency

you really cant play brawl with dial up either though
Get online on your computer via dialup, get a lan adaptor for you wii, connect the wii to your computer. enable internet connection sharing on the network adapter in controlpanel=>network connections
That's the easiest way to do. I'm a computer programming / network administration. trust me there are plenty of ways to do it. that works on XP Home if that's all you have and don't want to get a wireless access point with multiple network ports

also how do you enable file sharing.

Dial-up could work on Brawl without being too laggy, but that all depends on how much bandwidth it uses.
