How will WiFi affect competitive Smash?

I'm not sure if there's another thread like this, so if there is, please direct me to it and lock this one. I already did a search, but I didn't find anything.

Anyway, what I really want to know is if WiFi will affect the tournament scene at all. There's sure to be online tournaments held here and on other sites, but what about tournaments held in specific areas? Could people unable to travel cross country register, along with giving their friend code, in order to take part in the tournament without physically being there? It probably isn't likely, and it's either going to be a gathering or completely online, but I just wanted to know if there were any plans like this.

I think tournaments will probably be in person, not online. There is the possibility of connection problems or lagging or something online, so it would make a lot more sense to have it be in person.

Yeah, I doubt that there will be actual WiFi tournaments, I'm sure there will be tons of people on forums and stuff setting them up.

I hear you. It's just that I don't really have the resources to attend tournaments, so online is a blessing in disguise for people like me.

That's the same with me. I've gone to one tournament before, and it was poorly hosted and pretty crappy-- all stages were playable, with items.'
I'd love having an online tournament, but it would be hard and also kind of stupid with lag and the limit of options to battle (without stock).

WiFi will be an incredible resource when it comes to being able to play many people in your region. Seeing as how there will be more people to play with, the competitive scene would be better as a whole, and the skill will be more evenly distributed over the world as opposed to the best popping out of only high populated areas. Still, even with WiFi, people who live in large cities and have more active communities will still have a larger advantage, but this time around it won't be as hefty as it was.

I as well would like to enter tournaments, but can't because of the lack of smashers around here.
There are just too many people like us - online tournaments will be there as long as there are smashers who can't attend RL tournaments.

I'm from the UK, I've been to 3 tournaments here.
I don't that THIS country is going to go online besides for training for a tournament etc, or just playing friends, I doubt (unless a bi-monthly mini-online tournament with no money involved happens) that there will be any OFFICIAL tournaments that will be held online. I can't ever see it happening because of issues like (I think some people might have already suggested these):

* Lag
* People Disconnecting Accidently
* Peoples internet being crap
* Tournament players from Melee not being able to afford Wireless Internet Routers right away as the Nintendo Wifi Dongles are horrible for the Wii and 80% of the new ones BREAK.

I think, for this country and many others, we'll just use it to cut down expense on traveling for training for tournaments... I can imagine North America doing the same, being with people in real life at a tournament is far more fun than talking to them over MSN or AIM or something.

Yeah, I don't think real life SSBM tournaments would work out because of issues like:

*People being late
*People not being able to go to tournaments
*Tournament players from SSB64 not being able to afford good controllers right away as third party ones are horrible for Gamecube and 80% of them BREAK.

There are always disadvantages against different methods of hosting tournaments. But that doesn't mean those methods aren't going to work. The only serious issue for online tournaments is lag, but I don't see that problem alone stopping online tournaments.

Well my concern is if some one has a better advantaged like say a Knowledge of how to tech.
Takes practice is all. That's basically the whole gist of it. Thanks to various reasons already stated and more, Wi-Fi will likely be a glorified version of a training mode. It's much too unreliable to hold a true tournament with high stakes. It'll be used for mostly casual fights. Tournaments and other big games will need to be played reliably in person. I mean personally, I'm going to be wary accepting a battle where my opponent's internet connection is weak. I'd look for the ones with the best latency first. Even then, it won't be perfect.

That's not to say anyone won't learn anything from playing online though. For sure, new strats will be found faster this time because a wide group of people will play with one another multiple times.

I do wonder how PAL and NTSC versions will play against each other. If PAL experiences some minor changes to bugs, their playstyle may be completely different despite playing the same characters. It should make an interesting matchup.

AND THEY DO WORK T_T....

Also: The Gamecube came with a free official gamecube controller which were the best GameCube controllers EVER made.

Online tournaments is a nice idea for countries with HARDLY any players like Austraila and other countries considering they couldn't afford a LARGE plane ticket fee.

Btw people being late isn't a problem, if their late, then they can't enter if the tournaments already begun, simple as. :/

Otherwise, this should be in Tournament Discussion like the guy with the pit icon said.

My point exactly. Sarcasm, my friend. I used nearly the same arguments that were used against online tournaments, against real life tournaments. Despite all of those disadvantages, real life tournaments do work, so online tournaments will probably work as well.

Also: The Gamecube came with a free official gamecube controller which were the best GameCube controllers EVER made.
Wavebird, for the people preferring that. Just like players use both regular gamecube controllers and wavebirds, people will use both wi-fi dongles and wireless routers.
