How will we unlock characters?

How do you guys think we'll unlock everyone? How many VS matches or what modes do we play?
I think we can unlock Falco by plauing Multi Man Smash, and unlocking Ness by playing trough Classic Mode atleast 1 time.

I'm hoping Jigglypuff is back and is as easy to unlock as it was in 64 with just any difficulty, any round of Classic.

I think Megaman might be tied to Smash Run just because of how much like a Megaman game it can feel when running around blasting enemies. A lot of the Smash Run demos played his music regardless of your character choice as well.

I'm guessing Streetpass might be one of those second ways to unlock characters, similar to how Brawl had multiple methods.

I always want characters to be unlockable from VS matches, as I basically always play those when friends are around, and would feel weird going off to play single player when there's versus to be played.

I'd also like some to be unlocked from Smash Run, if only so I can pseudo-force some of my less fun-loving friends to play some rounds of it.

I really hope they leave Streetpass for other things. I hardly ever get to do Streetpass where I live, and I want to be able to play as many characters as possible as soon as possible.

I think there should be at least two methods to unlock any character, just like in Brawl. One by simply playing matches and another for doing special "achievements".

For example, maybe to unlock Luigi you'd have to either play 25 normal matches or beat Classic mode with Mario.

Kid Icarus Uprising has some achievements that rewards you for playing a chapter on at least a certain intensity.

Maybe some unlocking methods can include: Beat Classic Mode at Intensity 5.0 or higher.

Sorta like how Ness was unlocked by beating Normal 3-lives in Smash64?

It's almost a given that we'll have a checklist like Air Ride and whatnot for achievements, maybe they'll put characters on there (despite not having done so in Brawl).

How to unlock Sonic
1. Play 100 matches
2. Use Mario 10 times in Classic Mode
3. Find a EggRobo in Smash Run
4. Event Match-Mario vs Sonic (beat Sonic on Final Destination with no items to unlock him)

I like what Brawl did play vs matches or SSE. I hope you unlock people by beating classic mode with a certain difficulty and certain character.

The first thing I'm going to do when I get the game is run through Classic mode 10 times. There has always been a character available for beating classic once. There have also been characters in 2 of the last 3 games that you get by completing Classic mode 10 times, and for completing classic mode in under a certain time.

I think we'll have to wait until we know what the starting roster is before we can decide what unlocks who. But I'd assume Luigi Falcon and Marth will be among the first unlockables, like they were in Brawl.

I have a feeling Megaman will have a similar unlock criteria to Snake (Wily Castle will be a starting stage and you play on it a certain number of times)

Various different ways. But I assume Mewtwo will remain the hardest character to unlock....
Ridley and King K Cruel will also be insanely hard to unlock, imo.

Playing the game. As usual, there will most likely be plenty of different ways to unlock characters and stages.

Maybe you can buy new characters like you can buy trophies? All it displays is the silhouette of the character available at the shop and you pay a fortune to start a match with the hidden character to win him. But if you lose, all that money goes to waste. And they're not ALL available from the start, maybe completing certain game modes unlocks their display at the shop. (And buying them makes the difficulty really hard)

As long as its a method that isn't too imposing or farfetched (Melee's "Play x00 of Matches" / "20 hours of gameplay" im looking at you mewtwo), I'm fine with whatever kind of criteria Sakurai decides to implement.

It'd be cool if you unlock a character by winning a battle in Smash Run without collecting any upgrades!

Mewtwo's unlock condition in Smash 4: Play 20 hours of Vs matches OR Play 1200 Time matches :troll:

I'm pretty sure that's almost impossible unless you stand still.

I hope it takes longer to unlock them all than in Brawl, but not as long as it took in Melee.

That's what I was thinking, too, but I guess if it's a character you really want its worth the wait. Maybe some other rewards, too?

I think characters will unlock the same way they always have, but with some other methods added.

  • Beat Classic Mode with a certain character or difficulty.
  • Beat Home Run contest with a certain score.
  • Beat Classic Mode with an intense difficulty handicap added (like in KIU).
  • Beat Smash Run under certain conditions or with a certain character.
  • Beat Specific Event Matches.
  • Beat Multi Man Melee x100 Challenge.
  • Play a certain number of matches in V.S. Mode.

This time, I think unlockable characters will be spread out among all the different gameplay styles.

I think the best thing to hope for is that the unlockables are spread throughout the game in the various game modes. I'm not the greatest at any mode but I will say that unlocking characters was never outside the range of my abilities. As long as they don't make it impossible to unlock them I'll do it.

there should be (At least) one you unlock by defeating a certain number of enemies in smash run. An example would be to beat 50 sneaky spirits to get that one rhythm heaven character people are talking about.

I want them as hard to get as Melee and as many options as Brawl.

Examples:

Play 30 hours of VS / Finish Classic Mode as every other challenger to unlock:mewtwopm:.

Play 20 hours of Smash Run / Play 1300 matches to unlock :4metaknight:.

Oh, you want a challenge?

Complete Classic Mode 400 times on Intensity 9.0 / Complete 7500 matches to unlock :4luigi:.

That's still just repetitive tedium :V

"Do this relatively difficult thing to unlock this guy" is fun.

"Play normally until you eventually unlock this guy" is just.... meh.

"Do this thing a million times because ****" is just an annoying way of artificially increasing difficulty.

I thought you weren't serious the first time. I guess I was wrong.

Complete Classic Mode in under x minutes? Defeat 200 Miis on Multi-Man Smash? To unlock :4pacman:, naturally.

I assume some can be rewarded through Smash Run. I'm fairly certain bosses were confirmed by a Nintendo employee for Smash Run, maybe a character can be unlocked by beating a boss or setting a certain time?
