Tilting has always been beyond me. I've learned to side/down tilt by holding in that direction for a moment, but short of turning off tap jump it doesn't work for up tilt. Anyone have tricks for doing it?

In the rain.
Do it slower and you won't jump.
Or, only press up slightly and you won't reach the threshold for jumping but the up direction will still register and you'll still be able to utilt, in the same way as how if you hold down the right distance you won't be crouching but if you hit A you'll dtilt

Also don't make threads like this that are bound to die out as soon as the question is answered. There's a Q&A thread in the competitive brawl subforum

Also, if you are using a character with bad smashes/ any time you can use a smash it'd be better to use a tilt, you can try setting your c-stick to tilt. I do this when I play snake and D3.

Either turn off tap jump or set CStick to tilts. I hate tap jump anyway, so it doesn't bother me, but you may want to CTilt.
