Mostly with planting and chopping trees. I've done multiple matches where I more or less only use trees, and I've setill never seen him chop one down. The most he gets is growing it.
And does anyone have any general tips for training him?

do a couple matches where all you do is plant, water, and chop trees. Nothing else. Eventualy he'll learn to chop.

I triedd that but nothing. He was in the like 30's though, think it might have been too late?

Amiibos learn forever. The number just means how good they are. Even after they hit level 50, their stats can still switch around, and they can learn new techniques.

Then what's the point of having a level cap of 50?

Flat improvements to discernable things, such as general reaction time?
If so, then imagine behaviour teaching like EVs in Pokémon - they get more effective the higher your level, but you can always redistribute them.

I don't have an amiibo so I'm purely guessing. I would say that if you play Villager dittos just go all out against the amiibo as you normally would, but when it's time to kill him only use timber.

If you don't actually accomplish anything by chopping down the tree, he'll think it's pointless and never learn it. You need to hit him with it. Unfortunately, I don't think the Amiibo can plan ahead, so just grabbing the wood and hitting him with it probably won't be enough.

It seems to be a mechanic that my Amiibo is bypassing as well. I think it's due to the nature, mind-games and the setup behind the tree that it doesn't commit to doing it as a secure kind of thing. The Amiibo reacts to the current situation it's in.
