How to short hop without getting arthritis

I've been working on short hopping. I have two basic strategies.

One is sliding over the C button very lightly, which is comfortable but not very consistent especially in matches.

The other is to as fast as possible press the C button with full force and then get off of it.

The latter works better but feels terrible on the hands. Any advice for effortless short hopping that won't give you hand cramps and arthritis?

Practice, you should be able to do it without thinking and without strain.

Practice the 'gracing your thumb off the c button' method and it will turn into something consistent, and soon you'll find your thumb isn't even leaving the c button

I would say practice the last method, I don't understand how it's hard on your hands at all, though.

If you think its so difficult to tap a c button fast, then maybe you have arthritis already, so, you can try to simply not shorthop at all... its not needed to play well with some chars.

No shorthops would be like playing as Blue Yoshi online
FIXED

In all seriousness, I have a better question to answer your question.

HOW TO PLAY CHOPIN'S 25TH ETUDE OPUS 12 WITHOUT GETTING ARTHRITIS?

The same principles apply - practice doing the technique with relaxed hands and arm muscles, getting closer and closer to the desired speed. Shorthopping is a very relaxed thing for my arm to do, and while getting used to it may seem hard at first, eventually it will become second nature and not at all hard on your hands and arms.

The technique I use is to just press the button quickly, no sliding involved. Don't "press with full force", that's just silly. It should be a quick, relaxed push, maybe even soft for maximum speed and control. Of course, pressure doesn't define shorthopping on the N64 controller, just make sure the button is pressed and released quickly.

Jake is definitely dropping Yoshi
Actually, funny enough, Daed is right. I play with no shorthop online. Playing without shorthopping really restricts your options. Trust me, I speak from experience.

Basically, just practice. It may seem strange at first, but after a while, you'll figure out a method that works for you, and then you'll be playing without even thinking about it.

lol my point is, if its difficult for you to short hop, dont obsess with it and learn other useful things... then you'll automatically learn to shorthop eventually. Sometimes people are too obsessed with learning advanced techniques and dont learn other important things and dont go step by step

idk, i disagree. i feel like shorthop and z cancel are 2 techniques that most other advanced techniques are built off of. practicing/learning combos wouldn't make sense unless you could z cancel and SH at least semi efficiently.

i agree that obsessing on perfecting a technique isn't really the best method and sometimes it'll come with time and natural application rather than vigorous practice....

If you're obsessed with taunt-canceling or 'dashdance to pivot tauntcanceled fastfalled edgehog' I agree, but shorthopping is so crucial that you should learn this as the first technique. Shorthopping and L-canceling.

It just takes practice and experience. It was very hard for me at first too, the hardest actually. After awhile, you barely notice you're trying to do it, and it starts to feel completely natural.

IMO zcancelling is the very first one and IMO go first for basic non short hopping combos, probably you should also learn how to pivot and dashgrab before... and then probably try short hopping.

I learned all of those advanced techniques together. Order is not important at all.

off topic: Chopin's "Ocean Etude" is beautiful beyond words.

if you can't short hop, double jump really fast instead.

Trying to teleport using the 270 degree turn makes my arm feel weird. I no longer do the full 270 degrees but cut corners so it doesn't cause as much soreness.
