How to seed players? Calculations and what not.

My local scene has around 30 players so far, and we were looking to seed players up to like 12 or 16. Though we are not sure how to go about with distributing points. Should it just be about placements? Their win/loss of the tournaments? Number of entrants and what not? Could really use some help.

Most places just put "notables" as far away from each other as possible and leave it at that. Power rankings would be cool but would require someone putting in a lot of effort. Easier to just take your few best players and scatter them evenly across the bracket.
