Hey, a lot of the people that I play PM with spam roll quite a lot and I'm really not sure how to punish it at all, I try things like dash dancing grabbing them but they usually just keep rolling and then hit me with something or grab me(maybe I should just get better at this?).

Its also made me get into the habbit or spamming rolls and I'm really not sure how to stop now, I try telling myself to stop rolling so much but I seem to do a lot worse, anyone got some advice?

Practice out of shield options, specifically jump-aerial. I feel like a good reason why many spam rolls is that they are trying very hard to escape from pressure, knowing this might help you consider other options that are just as good or better in getting out of pressure.
Punishing rolls is simply reading where they will end up and smacking them when they come out of their roll. Practice the timings, there's really not much to say, though it can be difficult, even though it's simple.

I'd ask what character(s) you play, and then give advice from there. IE, if you play someone with a safe projectile, you can be using projectiles to force your opponents to take damage/stop rolling. If you play someone fast like fox or falcon, you can probibally SHFFL nairs (nair-planing as i've come to call it) as fox or read and punish with knees or grabs (falcon). Rolling just for the sake of rolling isn't good, apply yourself and your character's move set and I'm sure you can learn to punish effectively.

Figure out sometimes when they like to do it and where they do it. Then remember that and the next time you think they are going to roll, try to get a read and punish them.

React to their roll with a non-offensive non-dedicated option that will get away from any potential grab or attack following, then punish that or continue doing non-dedicated actions. The threat of an attack is just as real as an attack itself, without the associated risk of punishment.

See how they react to your general approach sans the attack or grab coming with it. See if they tend to favor rolling one way or another and adjust accordingly by preemptively gettng to where they tend to roll. Use projectiles to force an approach. Space aerials and use empty hops to gauge their reactions.

Basically just gitgud at reading players before attempting to counteract them.

I'll try working on my dash dance grab against rolling then. Do you think Marth's dsmash could be good against it? Although its a little slow.

Very slow and easily punishable, I would advise against punishes with Dsmash. Too much commitment with not enough reward if it hits.

If you want to punish with a smash, Fsmashing in the direction theyll roll in seems much safer if you can predict correctly and even if you dont, the endlag on it is much less punishable.

But dont get me wrong, it isnt the best option. I agree with the dashdance - grab since Marth has such a godly dash.

this. if they roll when you dash up to them, which way do they roll? away or behind? if it's away, keep on dashing and then do your grab and whatever. behind? wd-back or space your dash start up so you can dd to catch them trying to get behind you.

if they're rolling during something unsafe, then you should work on not doing that or just feinting like you're about to do that thing, then just turning around and grabbing, etc...

whats worked for me is baiting them into fairs, what i do is i jump forward then jump back while at the same time using a fair. This works well with marth as he has imo one of the best fairs in the game.

Don't worry about anything character-specific to stopping rolling abuse (knowing that Marth's grabs are sooper good won't do you any good if you don't know when to use them). Instead, break it down, and keep it simple. Ask yourself the hard questions:

When does my opponent roll? Do they roll away? What to they do after? Another roll? Jump? Fight back?

Answer each of those, and you'll know how to stop the roll abuse. Usually it's something like "my opponent rolls each time I come within grab range, and then I always miss an attack/grab", and the solution is usually "my opponent rolls each time I come within grab range, but I don't grab, and instead bait the roll out."

Everyone else covered the important stuff.
Still, one thing that works REALLY WELL, in my experience, is just...

Walk right at them.

Don't run... just walk.

People start freaking out.
Badly. So, they start rolling enough to put WifiCarios to shame LOL.

I associate it with the type of walking Megatron does by default, see here:

The menacing stroll, as I like to call it.

I also main Marth, and have a friend who does this a lot. Generally what I'll do is bait them to approach me, shield their attack, and grab out of shield to setup a combo. Throwing upwards and juggling generally works really well for players like these, as most of them won't know what to do in the air where they can't roll, especially against arguably one of the best jugglers in the game.

As others have noted, the best counter to rolling is just reading. There are a lot of tutorials online that cover this (I'd link one but I'm under 10 posts, the best one I've seen is titled 'Smash Tutorial #2: Reading Comprehension').

Best of luck!

I use down smash or any other attack that hits low on the ground, like Down tilts to punish people who spam roll. Besides it is not even a good idea to spam roll, because you are bound to get hit by Down-tilts and Down-smashes.
