Im not sure if I am late on this but i figured out how to do it and just wanted to share with all you great guys who have been helping me out as a new comer to the series.

All you have to do is dash towards your enemy, and press the Cstick up twice very quickly and delicately to do it without dash attacking them, and the same after you go past them but dont connect with the dash attack.

I really hope this helps some, and I am very sorry if this is old news, or it doesnt work for others. I have tried it on 2 controllers, and so far this seems sure fire. I can do both techniques 98% of the time now.

If anyone has any questions or doesnt understand, I may be able to make a video later.

I haven't tried pressing the C-stick up twice, but I go down-up on the C-stick, and then I immediately hold Z to charge the attack (keeps you sliding for longer, and you can release it whenever you want to fire the mortar). I do believe this has been mentioned before though.

Yeah, but I find the way I use to be more reliable. I mean it may just be me. Either way, I didnt think it would hurt to post.

Well, i've practiced without C-sticking. I can do it now Almost flawlessly using A, and UpA. I use wiimote+nunchuck, there ARE no C-sticks :p

i've been practicing the mortar slide and you don't have to tap the c stick up twice to do it (without contact.) Just go to training mode and try it in a slower mode to figure out what frame you can do this. After you get the timing of the dash atk you can do it without making contact. I also learned that it is alot sooner if you want to mortar slide without making contact.

Note that you don't have to use the c stick so you can use the c stick for other thingsl, like if you desire to wavebounce etc...

This is actually old news, the performing a Cromslide (that's what it's called) without hitting anyone. But good to see that people are figuring it out, I guess.

I use the Cromslide as a KO move most of the time, so I would prefer it to connect so the mortar can spell doom.

That and I am inept at doing it without connecting.

I find it useful when you don't want to get grabbed from the roll (seems to happen to me nowadays).

I came with a different method to use it, for me it's the easiest one:

I disabled the analog for jumping, and mapped the buttons on my GC controller like this:

X = jump
Y = grab

I did it for a simple reason, I found that my middle finger is ALOT faster than my thumb, this big difference allows me to unleash the move everytime.
So now I hold the controller quite different with my right hand, I'm not using my thumb at all, you need to get used to it, but it doesn't take long.

Hope it helped.

...Although I B-stick and I have Z set to attack, and Y to grab, I still don't need to remap how I hold the controller. But whatever works for you.

And I was about to post the nunchuck thing, but G-reg beat me to it, by a day.
