How to deal with spammy players online

As scrubby as this question sounds... how do you deal with spammy players online? I've recently fought a few players who just spammed smashes and multihit moves that are normally laggy and easy to punish but thanks to the nature of online I can't punish like I would offline. I want to use online as training for offline tournaments, and, you know, fun. But I can't tell if that's possible vs any player with the average amount of delay. what do
