How to deal with an "autopilot" play-style in melee

I've been playing Melee competitively for almost three years and have a decent amount of training and tech skill for my character. I received a comment from a fellow player yesterday at a tournament regarding how I play. He noted that I go into "autopilot" mode and do not deal with situations in the neutral or near the ledge as well I could. How could I deal with this problem? What sort of habits would you recommend I incorporate in practice to prevent this from happening as often or at all?

Any good responses are appreciated. Thanks!

It's not really something you can practice doing. You kind of just have to be mentally present while you are playing. Restrict your thoughts to be what you are currently doing, whether that is getting hit or hitting your opponent. Think one, and only one step ahead. "How will my opponent react to what I am doing, and how do I punish his response?"
