What can I do now to better prepare myself for ultimate? Should I practice in an existing game like 4? Are there any consistent techniques throughout the games I can practice?

Practice with every game you got

Breathe in and out

Survive until the game is released

YOU CAN DO IT!

all jokes aside, just keep practicing as much as you can. Looks like everything is pretty much gonna be the same

Just keep on playing Smash 4 and try not to develop any bad habits. Watching pro matches of your main in the Ultimate demo is helpful as well.

Also, here’s a video by the Beefy Smash Doods about this same topic that might help you.

Definitely play Smash 4, it's the closest thing to Ultimate in terms of gameplay.

Try learning the ins and outs of the character you're planning to main (it's also good to be able to play multiple characters).

Watch some gameplay of Ultimate to get a feel of the new mechanics.

If a demo comes out, play it.

*One thing to note while playing Smash 4: the meta of Ultimate is much more offensive than defensive, try not to dodge or air dodge as often.
(You only get one air dodge and are punished for multiple consecutive ground rolls, so try to keep that in mind when fighting others)

I don't know if Ultimate plays similarly to 4, but if it does, get some practice in with that.

Of course, there's really no need to become good at the game within the first day, or even within the first week. Take your time learning how the game plays and how your characters play, and most importantly, have fun with the game. Enjoy it.

The Beefy Smash Doods made a video on this, but I really didn't like it. The best way to prepare for Ultimate is to simply stop playing Smash 4. Almost all combos, playstyles, scenarios, etc. have been completely changed from Smash 4 to Ultimate. You'll start playing entering not only unfamiliar but confusing territory. Take a break. Play something else.
