When i fought with a good one, i kept getting grabbed by that annoying character and then got hammered. it seems that i can't avoid his multi-grab as well. any tips on this one?

ice-climbers are really weak and prone to fireball attacks, so try to play a little defensive by short hopping fireballs and wait for an opening to rush in with a bair. the best way to avoid being grabbed & hammered is to split them up by spacing bairs or spot-dodging their grabs.

try getting underneath themalso if possible, since mario's uair is really effective against them

Here's my strategy:

The Ice Climbers' infinite has one flaw and that's desyncing; desyncing is one of the Ice Climbers' main strategies but it also gives you the opportunity to prevent the Ice Climbers infinite if you make sure Nana can't get into formation with Popo; basically, many players are going to use desyncing as their main form of offense which gives you the opportunity to make sure Nana and Popo can’t get into position for their infinite (Focus your time on Nana, she's a low level AI and is often unresponsive to attack commands; just keep Nana far enough away so the Ice Climbers can’t get into formation).

*Just try not to get grabbed*

as an IC main i have some advice

1. as Tercel stated use fireballs
2. d air actually from my experience helps to seperate them on the occasion
3. use your air game!!!! IC have as far as im concerned mediocre air game so when they are in the air do not let up

Yeah, go with him, what I found that was good was to short hop then Mario Tornado. This usually splits them up giving you the chance to use your bair and seperate the two.

As other people have said, keep the Ice Climbers separated, and never run towards them in an attempt to do a ground attack, because that will always get you grabbed. Also, you could try playing around the ledges, which seems to work for my neighbor when we battle (I main Ice Climbers, he mains Mario), because Ice Climbers have some trouble fighting someone who stays right by the edge, and Mario can cape them if they try to spike you. Their fireballs work nicely for spacing and desyncing them I've noticed, and you can combine fireballs to get in an attack on them, because chances are they'll shield because of nana's delay time with dodging. Since I don't use mario myself, I don't know many more strategies against them, I could tell you how to use Ice Climbers against mario though :p
