How should I train?

I've been looking up guides and such, and practicing on CPU. But I'd like to know what's the best way of practicing other then playing against good people, and what should I practice, and how should I do it.

I mostly just train my technical skill by continuously doing it (doing this so it will become second nature). I also practice with another controller in and try to make combos and make sure that I can do them consistently. If you want to see what some good combos are, just watch a professional match.

Playing against good people will be sort of like tests to see where you are in your skill and what areas need improvement. Other than that, I would say that it's up to you!

Also look into buying an SD card for your Wii and downloading 20xx Melee Hack Pack. It will let you play against computers who do advances things like tech away from you, use randomly selected DI (simulating humans), and do advanced techniques like L-cancel perfectly, shine spike you, shield grabs, etc.

In general when practising alone I'll focus on perfecting technical movement e.g. wavedashing out of dash, ironing out any inconsistent Lcancels and also chaining basic combos on a CPU (which is sometimes annoying due to frame perfect jabs but if anything it makes you play faster) and generally anything I don't want to be worrying about when I get the chance to verse others.

When I do play other people I work on my spacing, how quickly and how many of their habits I can 'download' and the specific match up for the character their playing and i'll take and save mental notes e.g. nair is a great combo continuation on marth, shield patience and slower player bops luigi etc
