How quickly did you get into competitive melee

I've been playing melee for a while (not so long after it came out). I played it seriously since the beginning. But if you mean competitive as tournament style, I have yet to truly experience anything like it.

Of course I wanna get competitive, but I don't really have any friends for that and it seems the people near me who do it are having problems with the spot they usually play at.

Just recently got into competitive Smash, tbh. Was playing Brawl for about a year, and then began to miss Melee about a month or 2 ago. Been hooked ever since.

5 years of casual experiance prior, played brawl but didnt know about melee metagame, found wombo combo video on youtube, attempted to play replicate captain falcon's amazing movement in brawl, didnt work, watched advanced how to play melee, saw the fun and crowd hype that made everyone love the game, wanted to get better, dealing with a super depressed state from parental issues at the age of 13, used melee to escape, met a local player, enjoyed the challenge, met more players and became friends with them, taught my roomate in highschool and play with him nearly every day.

Melee is the best thing that ever happened to me. I'm dead serious.

I played this game casually for a bit before Brawl came out with 2 friends. I was always the best and they never beat me.

Anyways, when Brawl did come out, we were mad hyped! We played that game casually for a month or so and somehow found out about a local tournament. This is when I started playing competitively. After a few months the local place stopped doing the Brawl tournaments.

Maybe a month or so later a guy I met, Terral, contacted me about some small tournament he was hosting at a church. I don't remember how I met Terral at all but he was doing monthly brawl tournaments. Even though we played Brawl it was actually pretty fun because all the people there were really laid back and weren't super competitive.

After a while, this guy, Ziv, that plays Melee, moved to Springfield. He contacted a couple of Melee guys that lived around here and started playing at our venue. After a month or 2 he got me to start playing and I was like:

"Wtf, this game owns my soul."

We still have the monthlies at the church and do smashfests every week there. I don't play Brawl competitively but I do join the brackets at the church since they're free and the Brawl crew is actually really cool.

Our crew was talking about how funny it is that we go to a church to play smash, like it's our religion lmao.

I was playing Soul Calibur 2 and Halo 2 before this game came into my path. One of my friends challenged my gaming mastery by insisting that I would never be able to beat him in melee with any amount of practice. But I'm the gaming masta, so I stepped up and proved him wrong, lol.

Melee is the ONLY reason I ever bought a gamecube and is the only game I own on for the gamecube to this day. I picked up melee around Oct 2007. Bought the game for myself Feb 2008. Found a gaming club that played melee. Once they had a melee 1v1 tournament, I hit it off from there.
