(The picture above is just a funny parody I made. After that I got the idea for this thread.)

Lets say the game would sell alternate costumes. You would only get the base model and 2 - 3 recolored skins. How much would you pay for certain skins?

If you wouldn't pay a cent because you bought the whole game for the full price, would you buy skins if the game was cheaper (~30$) or even for free?

You can also talk about skins that are not confirmed, like Dark Link or Dr. Mario!

Of course this will not happen, but I'm just curious what if...? :3

Well, it's not like they contribute to the gameplay.
So I wouldn't worry too much.

$8.00 for one costume? No way. I think if there was a pack of 15-20 costumes for $10, I MAY do it (if the costumes were really good). But no more than that.

I like to think I'm above paying for superficial virtual content, but the truth is I would pay through the nose for an Outset Island costume for Toon Link.

You mean Pajama Toon Link? :D
But that's exactly what I meant by "unconfirmed skins" ^^

No. I am tired of companies handing out costumes for payment. Back in the day, all we had to do was to complete the game under certain conditions; however, nowadays you have to slap down money just to see your character in a jacket.

The only way that it would work with us paying for it, is if Nintendo charged Club Nintendo coins, and even then, they would have to be under 50 coins.

Costumes shouldn't be something people would have to pay for. I understand characters and maps/stages, but not costumes. I'm perfectly fine with having to unlock them though.

However, In the event that the Lord/Vanguard design for Ike is only available for DLC, I will throw my money at the screen.

That's why I asked, what if the game was cheaper or F2P, like LoL? What if it used the same buisness model?
Let's say the game has only 5 stages and all the playable character, but nothing else. It's F2P, online only and people can purchase costumes to support the game.

This is like the worst case scenario :D

Hehe, that's exactly what I wanted to know. And I would love that skin for Ike as well x3

PSASBR was 4.99 for a four pack of costumes. Just to put this in perspective.
Oh thanks for the info!

If Dr. Luigi or Dr. Mario is a costume. I'll go gamestop.

If both are a costume, I'll take out my credit card.

If both are costumes and Dr. Wario is too, I'm jumping out the window just so I can make it to gamestop or the bank faster.

I still prefer to unlock alternate costumes and characters in video games, no matter which one I play.

In all seriousness, though, I might be willing to pay, but one buck is my limit.

Honestly no, I wouldn't. I think they should all be included in the game.

The "no because they should already be in the game" kind of sidesteps the question.

If Nintendo had an unlimited amount of time to create the game, I'm sure it would be possible for every character to have a plethora of costumes. The fact is, though, that Nintendo has a deadline to get the game out. So when prioritizing their time, they may only have time for a few alternate textures and/or costumes because they spent the rest of their time tweaking the balance of characters, debugging, etc.

I think everyone agrees that the more costumes, the better. But the question is: AFTER they release the game, would you pay for DLC? Saying no because they "should have added them initially" is kinda ridiculous to me (unless of course, you would be ok with the game being delayed more and more so that EVERY possibility is added). And don't say "well additions should be free," because the developers' extra time/energy spent on them should be rewarded with profit.

Hell no! Nintendo has always taken a strong stance against DLC, and I've always liked that. Package a game ready to go. New Luigi U was an odd surprise, but it was still an entire new game using old elements. That's fine!

Something that can literally be whipped up in a couple hours by a bored artist... It's a total money grab. What's even worse is these things are planned now, because it's basically raw profit. The amount of man hours put into cheap add-ons is almost nilch.

I sure hope Nintendo sticks to their consumer-based values. I'm open to DLC, but it better be worth it.

edit: IMHO, we're already gettin' job'd with this Amiibo thing, but at least there's the tangible object to sit on your desk and look pretty, AND an entirely OPTIONAL gameplay bonus to go with it (even though the toys weren't necessary to make it work).

Lying about my country.
I'd pay nothing, a simple cosmetic change is simply not worth any amount of money.

Maybe if I bought a digital game and had like $1 leftover money and I could get something for it. And that's still a maybe.

I wouldn't complain about it existing, though, because again, it's just a simple cosmetic change, who cares if you don't have it?

The only alternate costume I would buy is Dr. Mario for Mario, along with megavitamins replacing the fireballs.

I would pay. Most people would pay. It's like League of Legends. People spend $100's of dollars on that game just buying skins.
Not to mention characters. I know I've spent at least $100 on content for League of Legends. Sure I didn't BUY the game, but I spent more money then a standard console game cost.

In general I would say there is at least 1 skin that a person would want to have. If every person that played Smash bought just the 1 skin that they wanted. Nintendo would make so much more then what it takes to produce, WHILE making everyone happy that they got that "cool" skin.

Sakurai should pay 1USD for each game that ships with Link's Skyward Sword "costume" still having the hat.
I'd personally pay something like 3$ tops for a really elaborate costume like Classic Pit or Dry Bowser, not more, unless there's a costume like the legendary skins on League of Legends, where the character also has new particle effects and updated sound effects, I would pay up to 8$ for a REALLY GOOD costume like Skyward Sword Zelda with younger voiceover and different visual effects on her attacks, or Tuxedo Bowser, or Pink Gold Ridley, or 8-Bit Mario, or Bad Box Art Megaman. Maybe PED Samus complete with Phaazon particle effects for her attacks?

NO! You're getting 100% of a Smash game PLUS the extra content, why nowadays a developer has to either delay the game endlessly or not use the concepts they've thought up because they're going to be satanized by people like you!? I understand, companies like Capcom and EA are a bunch of filthy, evil cashgrabbers, but I'd be all over DLC alternate costumes with some actual effort put into them, like Mac's Sweatshirt costume, or the two Wii Fit Trainers, or the various Villagers. Costumes should be handled like LoL does, the more complex the costume and the more hours and effort it takes to make, the more expensive, I'd buy a Samus with phazon effects added to her attacks IN A HEARTBEAT.

I think if any additional character skins were released after launch, the skins should be unlocked through defeating a Nintendo Employee's Amiibo that comes bundled as a patch containing the skin as well as the amiibo. Otherwise they've had plenty of time to make additional skins to (hopefully) satisfy the desires of the customer base.

If I like something, I'll buy it.

I'm sure they'll have some sorts of DLC in smashbros, and if costume DLC is a big part, I hope they include multiple costumes together in packs instead of having to buy them separately.

Sort of like how BlazBlue and Persona 4 Arena allow you to buy alternate colors for 4 characters at a time.
(You unlock like 4 additional colors, some times more for each character)

I'd be totally down if they made the costumes after release and they were priced correctly.

I think skullgirls had a costume pack for 10$ that had a few skins for each character. If say smash had a bundle like that, even if it was one skin per character I'd see that's pretty fair given were looking at a roster around 40.

Not sure about individual..I could not see anything over a dollar being fair.

Nintendo's been pretty good with dlc recently and I really doubt smash will be the exception.

most I'd pay is $3 for a bundle. like a Doctor Pack that includes Dr. Mario, Dr. Luigi, Nurse Peach or a Villain Pack that includes Dry Bowser, OoT Ganondorf, and an alt for any potential unannounced villain.

I know it was just an example, but $8 for a single costume? that thing better cure cancer

I'm a bit amused at the overwhelming responses saying "No! They should be free." and "Maybe for a dollar." When it comes down to it--that is, if Ninty does do paid DLC--everyone will pay exactly what Nintendo asks for if they like a costume enough. You've been waiting years for that Dr. Mario alt costume with pills in place of fireballs. The asking price is eight bucks. What do you do?

You're gonna freakin' buy it, perhaps begrudgingly; but don't tell me you guys wouldn't fork out cash to the Big N for a costume you're salivating over. Because just as you're gonna hand over the sixty for the game, you'll forfeit 1/7th of that for your favorite costume.

Let's not kid ourselves.

Nah, usually I like characters better in their original form, at most I'd whip out a little cash for an alternate Samus design, and that still depends on what suit they'd use for that.

I understand what you're saying but at the same time making it costumes rather than characters/stages keeps the game fair for everyone and keeps it from being "pay to win", so that's why I prefer costume dlc.

It's a namco bandai game so maybe we'll get goku and naruto clothes lol :p

Wouldn't exactly go as far as saying it would be "pay to win" since there's no guarantee that DLC characters would be better than the original roster. But I'm sure if people had the money to buy costumes, they'd much rather use that money for characters/stages, assuming they'd be available. And it's not like Nintendo is going to add a new character/stage every month if they go the DLC route with characters/stages. I do understand your points though.

The people at Miiverse would flip out to see Goku and Naruto costumes...then we'll end up getting Shrek ears for everyone

People laughing at the $8 costumes have never played League of Legends...that being said, since i do play league and have waaaaay too many skins, I would gladly pay for costumes for characters i play and enjoy playing. It's a simple concept- you like the costume, you buy it. If you don't, don't buy it.

Yeah but League is F2P. My issue is that you're paying $60 for a game and then if there are extra cosmetic features that you want to add, you'll be spending more money (granted games like -insert contemporary fighting game here- usually have economical prices for pallete swaps but most of the time they're already on the disc and need to be unlocked by spending more money). I'd rather they just make a bunch of alternate costumes and add them to the game and make them unlockable features a la that grid that was in Brawl and Kirby's Air Ride.

Idk...if one dlc character ends up being high tier you know the sparks are gonna fly
