How is playing online different?

Basically, right now I need people to tell me EXACTLY how playing online (on Kailera, I assume) is different from playing with someone in the same room on the same screen.

1. Is there much lag when playing Smash online? How much does it affect the gameplay, decision-making, etc.?

2. Can your USB-adapted controller be programmed to do ALL the things you could normally do in Smash? For example, short-hopping, dashing/dash-dancing, tilt VS smash attacks, fast-falling, etc. If there are any techniques that CANNOT be executed while playing online with a USB controller, please tell me what they are.

3. Can you chat via Kailera with your opponent/other players, or do you have to open up a separate chat program to be able to do this?

Please answer these questions as thoroughly as possible. I'm still kinda trying to decide whether or not I should start playing online, and your answers may help me determine that. Thanks again.

Hi Puffer. I was banned but I got a chance to read many of your posts. Many of them ask good questions. All I am able to tell you is: if you like smash, STFU and play. You make too many threads that can be answered by 1 sesh on kaillera.

theres delay , depends on your ping , there are also desyncs , lag spikes , lag in general depending on the server/players connection usage or players specs

no you can program only autofire for instant DI or multishinecancels ask Richard or Meowkitty for more information

theres chat integrated with kaillera

but i kinda agree with alex , just play the game , if you want to play online , play online , if you dont feel like it , dont . try to decide and judge things on your own lol

'Kay I guess I should ask this then: Taking into account all the things that hinder your game when you're playing online (lag, inability to input specific DI, etc.), is it still possible to IMPROVE at the game? I figure if there are too many things restricting your playing style when you're on Kailera, then it would be better for me not to bother at all and just keep practicing with opponents offline - I'd be just as happy doing that. Basically what I'm asking is if the "cons" of playing online outweigh the "pros" of being able to play more opponents.

puffer, you can adapt and it's not as bad as u think it is because it's easy to adapt to it. you learn a whle pound more online...and I mean a lot by versing peeps. I learned the uses of falcon kick when boom used it against me (no not edgeguard XD). He falcon kicked off the ledge when he smacked me away and used his falcon kick to chase me...then he did a dbl jump and spiked me before I came back on stage. Also, I learned from DaBomb that you can throw link's bomb on a ledge downwards at an angle and hit people below u by just rolling towards the edge and holding down and throwing the bomb down. It's also rlly fun and u meet new friends etc XD.

Alright - I might give it a shot. Also, which version of Smash do most people use on Kailera - U.S. or Japanese? Or is there a fair share of each?

I tried it once for a bit. I never got the controller, so it was tough to play as well with a keyboard, but there is some latency that makes it difficult to do combos. Although there are some cons to playing online, you can definitely improve in that you are able to face many different people who use different characters and tactics.

it decreases the skill gap between good players and not as good players
Uh oh - that's not good. If someone's better than I am, I WANT them to be able to beat me; that'll give me a greater challenge to work at, and it'll hopefully help me learn new things quicker as well. If the skill gap is decreased, that means that the players who're better won't be able to "shine" like they should - but then again, it also gives those who aren't so hot at the game a nicer chance of winning. I guess it goes both ways.

I just read a p2p thread and apparently p2p has a lot less lag/delay/desync than normal Kaillera play does. Is that a better option? It also seems like people want MORE people to play p2p, so I'd be willing to play that as well. Perhaps I should just try both Kaillera AND p2p and see which one suits me best.

i disagree with that last part, you will find people of all different levels online. i think that online adds extra levels too. often you find people who dont know how to use the keyboard correctly adnt herefor cant up+b. in all honesty, if you have a controller, its basically the same thing. keyboard really doesnt make you better on console excepting new stratagies to try. lag isnt that bad if you screen. under 30ms ping and your fine. you should give it a chance. also p2p is a pain to coordinate games. its almost always by appoint ment where kaillera you can go on anytime and find people to play.

Honestly - why isn't there a p2p thread that explains EXACTLY how to set up p2p games? It seems like every time I HEAR about p2p, I hear complaints that "no one plays it" even though it's "so much better." If it's better, why isn't there an explanation thread for it on the Smash64 Discussion Boards? Amon Amarth made one awhile ago that's still up and running, but it's mostly people ranting back and forth on why they do/don't use p2p...I think we need to get serious about the whole p2p thing and make a good, solid thread that explains how to use it effectively.

I, for one, still don't know the exact differences between Kaillera and p2p play because I haven't tried either of them yet. I just ordered my N64 USB controller today, so as soon as it comes I intend to try both of them. When it DOES come, I'd better be able to understand how to set up games using both Kaillera AND p2p...if I can't, guess what? I'll just start asking questions again! Yay!!!

So please, someone make an official p2p thread.
