How is online brawl different than offline brawl?

And you dont have to wait for someone/stage to load kind of thing. xD
That's pretty much it since you mentioned the lagging already Hahaha. =D

Online:
No Stock. OTher than with friends.
No HR contest.
You can't play on custom stages.
The other players aren't sitting/standing right next to you.

Offline:
No lag.

High Latency, and lag spikes generally appear in most Wi-Fi matches. The shield timing is way off too, you'll find yourself getting hit more often.

More people use Ike online than offline.

More people smash-spam, thinking they're hot s**t because there's button lag and you can't shield it online than offline.

Fact.

online:Taunt messages, character and level choice time limit, and no custom stages which there should be; custom stages=more fun
offline:no taunt messages because you can curse and insult right in their face and no time limit
