How exactly does ledge trumping work?

I play Mega Man, and have had mixed results when trying to bAir my opponent after trumping. Sometimes they line up just right, but other times they are too high or far out, even if it is the same character. Conversely, whenever I fight a good Shiek, I can't seem to avoid her bAir with anything but a buffered roll onto the stage. I'm missing something with how this works. Is there some kind of DI? Does your % affect where you pop off to?

Unless I'm mistaken, there are 2 main factors:

-When a character, like your victim, grabs the ledge, there is a brief time before they can be trumped. They cannot be trumped the very instant they grab the ledge.

-When a character, like you, grabs the ledge, there is a brief time before they can intentionally get off, via hitting "down" or "back." You cannot let go of the ledge the instant you grab it. If you look in the Pikachu section of the previous patch notes, you see the change that was made to Pikachu? He used to be able to let go of the ledge faster than other characters, but that was fixed so it's now the same as everyone else.

Basically, if you successfully trump someone, it's generally easier to hit them with a Bair (or whatever) if your trump timing is more accurate. If you grab the ledge immediately after they grab the ledge, you'll be able to follow them offstage more quickly. If you're slower, they'll have traveled farther, making followups difficult.

Adding to Asdioh's explanation, grabbing the edge with a tether allows you to let go of the edge quicker than usual for some reason. Also, you can't force an opponent to be trumped. They can buffer an action during the time they can't be trumped so that they roll/jump/stand/attack on the first possible frame.

Great post.

I'm not sure I follow everything though...are you saying that when you trump your opponent, the time until they can act is determined by when they grabbed the ledge rather than when you trumped them? That doesn't sound right. Aside from giving them more less time to buffer an action, what is the advantage of trumping at the first opportunity?

When you ledge trump, the opponent is not immediately throw away. When he is he has like 30 frma of lag.
But you, you can't let the ledge immediately.
A grab the lege at 0t
B grab the ledge 4 frames after, at 4t
A is ledge trumped at 14t (idk exactly) and can't act for 30(?) frame
B can't let go the ledge for 20 Frames (?) but after that he has 10 frame of advantage, and most airdodge take at least 2 frame to give invincibility.

Now the position where ledge trumped are send depend of which character they are, and i'm pretty sure the player can influence it.

When anyone grabs the ledge, they're forced to hold onto the ledge for a minimum of 22 frames. Even if an opponent grabs the ledge and you grab it one frame afterward, you will both be forced to hold onto it for 22 frames.

If the opponent buffers a Ledge Jump, Ledge Attack, or Ledge Roll during those 22 frames, they cannot be ledge trumped and will do the buffered action on Frame 23.

Grab the ledge while someone else is already grabbing that ledge. If successful, you force them off the ledge.

If you are falling while you're next to a ledge, you'll grab the ledge. It is literally the exact same thing as grabbing the ledge normally.
