This is a difficult to explain question, first off, I'm sorry for my awful english. This game feels strange to me, before smash 4 I played brawl, 64 and tried PM, and some things here are really strange, for example: autocancels, you know when have almost no landing lag from an aerial, in this game I feel like it doesn't exist, or a move autocancels during the entirety of the attack or it doesn't. DI and Meteor cancels too, they took them out or made them much weaker and that doesn't feel right. But That's not all, even as a game it's strange, like the fact that there isn't an adventure mode. But the most strange thing are combos, the game has combos unlike brawl, but they don't feel right, they don't make you go like "YES" they make you go like "oh, down throw uair, ok". Mind you, I really like this game, but there are some things that are strange.Maybe this thread is totally useless and no one will get what I mean but I would like to hear what others think about this

Do not walk into this game playing Melee or PM. This game feels like Brawl but the ground game is Melee-esque. This game doesn't have wavedashing or any of Melee's ATs. Play this game like Brawl.

You'll find it far easier to get into Smash 4 if you played a lot of Brawl. Think of it as a Brawl without the glaring flaws. Some combos are possible (but many are situational and a vast majority of them are follow-ups from throws), speed is generally faster. Treat the game as an entirely different beast from Melee.

At a lower technical level, it feels better than the rest of the series. Moves are fluid, transitions are fluid, the game feels quick. If you're very technical, you can get the same feeling out of Melee and PM.

This game isn't Brawl. Honestly, it's unique. The only Smash that feels entirely like another is PM, and that's by design.

Meteor cancels being gone means that any meteor is a spike. It's good, because it removes the technical trick that let you subvert a meteor, without requiring a spike to exist to make up for it. Some attacks cancel landing lag quickly, others don't, it depends entirely on the move (see Shulk's nair for one that cancels very fast, see Bowser's bair for one that doesn't).

Virtually everything was tweaked between games. Go into it with a fresh mindset.

I played brawl for 6 years almost everyday, trust me I really play it and I never played melee, and I played PM for like 2 hours, I'm one of those that think that brawl is a good game. Autocancels are there, I know but in a stupid way, for example peach, her fair Can be autocanceled but it's pretty hard to do and it doesn't save too much time, I think meteor cancels were really fun but whatever,

Oh, I loved Brawl too. I was just detailing that each game has its own traits that can please some players and disappoint others. Meteor canceling was cool, but particularly with the offstage redesigns in Smash4, I think it's good that meteors can't be cancelled now. It's very much a matter of playing the game that has the most mechanics you personally enjoy.

smash 4 is balanced, almost all characters are viable and all, okay. but air dodges are too good, rolls are too safe, diddy is too strong. nuff said

It is like a faster Brawl, but less characters have a strong short hop aerial game (Wario, MK, even Ganon's stomp).
Some characters move like their Melee counterparts and work similarly to them on a basic level (CF, Fox), but others are still pretty floaty.
Combos are kinda stingy outside of utilt/uair juggles and characters get knocked back pretty easily, but it'll take a while to KO until you've got your percentages down and understand what to go for and when.
Some of the hitboxes are a little strange/misleading and there is no more grab armor, so be prepared for that.
Rolling is really good now and there is very little shieldstun, so there's a lot more you can punish on block this time around.
Dash -> shield feels a lot less responsive than it did in Brawl, but that might just be me.

I really appreciated Brawl's flow and how smooth some of the higher tiers felt (Brawl Wario was beautiful and I'd give anything to play him that way in 4), but the balance issues are almost dealt with; there are still some that feel unequipped to deal with some matchups or even approaching in general, but the game is pretty much okay.

If you enjoy matches based heavily on making hard reads on your opponent, you'll love Smash 4; it really levels the playing field.
For the most part, anyway.

I completely understand where you're coming from when you say that the game feels strange - it's a new entry in the series and, really a new breed. As stated by previous posters, in many ways the game is a logical extension or evolution of Brawl. It seems that the development team had no intentions of reviving the technical aspects of Melee, but rather expanding or improving upon the mechanics of Brawl by speeding up the engine, implementing simple true combos (with the ability to perform more consistent strings) and removing more annoying features like tripping. To me, the game is casual friendly enough to be fun for most who pick it up, but has the potential to give way to a deep competitive metagame (it's definitely not there yet).

As for the lack of an adventure mode, I do miss the Subspace Emissary and feel like Smash Tour is a complete waste of disc space.

I think that you're the one that got the question better than anyone else, maybe the game is a bit strange to me because I expected something more on the line of brawl and not it's own thing,Well I hope that the meta becomes better, it probably will. Smash tour is really boring, and even if you understand it, all of your friends and family probably won't, which is my case

That's really a placebo. I've seen numbers posted elsewhere that says, basically, Smash 4's roll is only 2 frames different from Melee's roll, and only 1 frame different from Brawl's.

Basically, it plays like Brawl but feels a bit more smooth and faster than that. Only downside to Smash 4 is the absence of both :snake:and :wolf:. Other than that, this game is a masterpiece.

It's not about the invincibility frames, it's about ending lag after it.

Smash 4 is what Brawl should have been if it didn't want to be Melee.

What I experienced from extensive online playing: Shielding, and especially "Perfect Shielding" & punishing (A-grabbing while shielding) is most of the time the key to success. Because shielding works so flawless, defensive gameplay gets rewarded more often. (Which is kind of sad)

There was internet in Brawl..
The service wasn't all that great with NWC since its infrastructure was poor at upgrading games and mostly updates the system. So with NN, that problem is easily remedied and you get updates regularly as you see them today.

Anyways, you'll feel right at home if you played Brawl a lot since its foundation is mostly that game but with various fixes and improvements.

Smash 4 does make Brawl feel like the beta-version. The play is fluid and there is a wide variety of playstyles. The slashes and effects give a high level of visual movement in this game. Online is not without its flaws, but very enjoyable. Best Smash so far.

there never were any patches from what I remember, and the online was really bad, there was lag in every game, and it was much worse then smash 4's
Yep, comparing Brawl's online 1-on-1 with Sm4sh's online 4-player-mode, the latter one downright shines in terms of lag-less-ness.

It feels similarly to Brawl, but with an added boost of speed. It's not Melee, in fact, most of the characters from that game are completely different. But as a person whose first game was Brawl, I'd say...

:4shulk:I'm really feeling it.:4shulk:
