How do you...?

Hi :) I know I don't post a lot but anyhow, again some short questions came up while I was smashing with my m8.

I play on an original N64 controller on emulator.

So my questions are on the finger techniques with the controller:

How do you... SH-Attack? For any B-moves I use my thumb on < (the yellow left button) and slide down to B, for A-moves I use my thumb aswell with the yellow down button. Do you do it like this or have you any other technique you prefer?

How do you... DJC? I tried various combinations and figured 2x yellow down + A with my thumb is a bit slow, so I went to slide yellow right - yellow down - A with my thumb. How do you do it? Is there a smarter way?

How do you... Grab? I started to always grab with Z-A at the same time, 'cause reaching R in time seems a bit hard for me... But otherwise some moves are kinda hard with Z-A, like moving a bit forward and then grab in the movement. What do you recommend? using R or Z-A? What are the pro-techniques :D ?

Thanks for your answers :) !!

Best regards,

Midlumer

Sh-Attack: I would use Down or Left C->A
DJC: x2 DC->A
Grab: lol use R mostly, Z-A if you can counter someone

Just use whatever you're most comfortable using tho. Practice and any set up will work for you.

Since I only have one question, I guess I'll put it in here:

How do you short hop so consistently? If I'm not actively thinking about how I'm going to press the C button for a quarter of a second, I end up hitting it too hard and my character doesn't short hop.

Its not that I CAN'T short up, but rather that I can't keep short hopping in a fight (like all of the pros do). I know HOW you short hop ("Release the jump button while still in the first part of the animation") it just seems that its abnormally hard for me to release it that fast.

Is there any wonderful piece of information you guys can give me that will help me with this?

first of all, there's a Q&A thread for stuff like this

second of all, consistent short hopping comes with practice, practice, practice.

training mode and practice your balls off. just tap it as fast as you can and eventually it will become second nature to you.

edit: oh look ninja'd.

Wrong, it's 3 frames, ie 0.05 seconds.

I know HOW you short hop ("Release the jump button while still in the first part of the animation")
No, you don't. It's hold the c button for at most 3 frames. That's common to every character, unlike the length of the jumping animation.

There's 3 different DJC techniques that I know about and two of them that I use depending on my character and/or situation.

1. Using up on the control stick and a C button for fast horizontal attack movements(moving forward with fairs for Ness) or quick djc uairs.

2. Double C down. Good for the Ness horizontal djc boost he gets. Yoshi can pretty much get away with double C down since he has slow DJCs.

3. Sliding from left C to bottom C. I don't use this lol.

there's also ANOTHER way (firo dun showeded me[THANKS FOR SERVER FIRO])

Slide your thumb from right c to down c to A, when he showed his technique to me he rolled his thumb while holding the controller awkwardly, from joint to tip right c down c A. might work well for others too

Also you can use stick--->c button-->R

u can opt to stick hop if need be when you get used to it and mix-up your timing (e.g. switch over to yoshi djc's)

Try Left C - Down C - A for djc. I main ness and that pwns for shield breaks. It really only matters for ground spamming djc, otherwise you can just double tap down c. But leftC-downC-A is prob best because you get it all in one fluid motion with your thumb. You're essentially (nearly) pressing the two C buttons at the same time with a different spot on your thumb, which is faster than double tapping a button.

This is interesting, but it seems way more awkward then using left c to down c to A :p

When are we gonna get together and have a mini smash-fest/tourney? :o are you still in the city?

wtf I thought right C down C was how everyone did Ness djcs, that's what I thought everyone meant by "button sliding" for years LOL. You actually "slide" your thumb. Maybe I should try to learn it with left C down C A because I'm not very consistent with right C yet.

this. except that i'm good with right c. i feel like left c is awkward because it's not in a straight line - you kinda have to zig zag from left c to down c to a. right c down c and a are all in a straight line.

Really? that seems so awkward... i mean, the buttons are in a line but to me it's a lot easier to do left c down c. which is basically also in a line. idk how you hold your controller, but i press all 3 parts of the djc without actually moving my thumb so it feels easier than sliding from right C. I also have huge thumbs. Maybe that helps? lawl

And I'd love to go but I can't make it this saturday :( but Chicago is way closer so we should set something up when you're all free :D

I slide from right c to down c to a too. I feel it's more precise to have the thumb moving and press the buttons with the same part of it, rather than not moving the thumb and pressing with different parts by rolling.

I made a quick video showing how I hold my hands during a DJC. I'm surprised that noone else does this. I use it for Yoshi too, I just press c-right first then roll, I end up pressing an extra c-button but it doesn't do anything anyway.

Here's a video of some DJCs. This was done using a hori though.

Stormcrow - we definitely have to get together sometime in the next couple weeks!

Also a tidbit - did you know that if you use PK Thunder 2 straight downward while ness is on a platform you can drop through, he'll go through it? It only seems to happen when he is on the ground.

^That's weird, I use the same buttons but I actually slide the tip of my thumb across the buttons. That seems awkward to position your thumb like that. If you're gonna do that you might as well use left c down c a, which is probably why nobody does it your way.

It's not awkward to me. If I try to DJC holding the controller normally I find myself just naturally moving that way anyway. And the point is to be able to roll from the bottom of the thumb to the top, not the other way around, which makes it easy and consistent rather than having your whole thumb over c left c down a.

Interesting method. I basically do almost the same thing with my thumb (rolling, not sliding my thumb) DJCing with left c to down c, just with my thumb facing different (thumb pointing toward the part of the controller the cord comes out of). It allows me to press left c, down c, B, or A all without actually lifting my thumb. I'm surprised nobody else seems to use this technique, it feels really easy to me. This way I can roll from left c to B for quick B attacks as well as DJC.

but firo, with that method isn't it slightly more difficult to use the B-button? How will you catch people in random pk fires?
