How do you practice DI and SDI?

Title says it all. It's probably just me, but detecting hitstun is just insanely difficult for me. A lot of players seem to SDI maybe once or more in a match and tech into a wall or floor to save themselves. Except, I've only done it successfully once...Ever.

Is the technique all in the reflexes (which mine aren't the best)? Or is there actually a legitimate way to practice this.

I used to have my friend hit me over and over all the time trying to get the timing down but that was a long time ago and I haven't genuinely practiced my DI in a long while. For the most part, my DI is alright. It really just comes down to getting it in your head and remembering to do it when you get hit or when you think you're going to get hit (bad idea but good for getting it down).

What I do to SDI is simply jam the control stick the exact instant i am hit. This isn't done on reaction, you must be expecting the hit. This is mostly done to survive combos where you know a certain move must be used at a certain time. Because it is anticipated, you can actually throw people off by hitting them with a different move than they expect or changing the timing. For example, as fox if they are SDIing your uair you can bair and they will have bad DI.

Thanks guys.

I've also noticed considerable difference in SDI distance when you hit the control stick more than once during hitstun. Is that how many players try to tech into walls and stuff?

I like to do a variation of a 4 stock match for this. Two players, four stocks, 8 minutes, like normal. But one person is evading the other the whole time. Your goal as the person evading is to make the match last as long as possible. Your goal as the person attacking is to make it as short as possible.

My friend won't do this with me, he just wants to fight and never practice. ;_;

well if he is attacking, you can evade and he'd be none the wiser :p
He knows, because I'm not throwing attacks where I should be. I've done it to him; he just stops playing.

I get what you're saying though, practice while I play. :)

Just charge a shot with Samus and practice SDI when it hits you. It's important to note that when rotating the control stick, each 1/8 circle movement counts as an input towards SDI. As, long as the hitstun lasts, you can add SDI movement. So don't just jam the stick if you can manage to get at least quarter circle in time.

DI has always just been natural to me, I suppose because I realized it was a thing before I ever got into competitive melee. Can't explain how to get better at it other than practice. Hitstun is more than long enough in most cases to react and DI.
