I hold my controller normally, but when I feel like there's a little bit more time to set up my float aerials, I hold y, push down whenever I'm at the right height, then immediately hold up on the control stick and let go of y so I can use the c stick to do aerials in place or floating the opposite direction. If I'm going to nair I just hold y, and if I'm unsure (or I need to float faster before an aerial) I hold y and switch right before the aerial. Its kind of weird but I got used to it because I wanted to be able to float fair in place without using claw
