How do you get back to the stage safely when hit above the stage?

I usually always come down with unsafe aerials and I always get punished hard by better players. What should I be doing while trying to get back to the stage instead?

Thank for the in depth information
This is obviously a joke reply, but don't think he was being a smart ass. It's actually a quote from the first falcon to break the mold and show his potential.

I try to mix it up. There really isn't a best way to get back for many characters when recovering high. Depending on what character you're facing, I think it's best to try for the ledge. Fake on stage DI, then DI away and recover. Saving your second jump is important. Other than that, sometimes its best to just try and get on stage, eat the hit if it comes, and recover better with good DI.

Oh I knew the phrase "Don't get hit", but I just wanted a real answer. But yeah I do mix-up DI, I tend to waste my second jump in bad situations though, I never really pay much attention to that.

A mix-up you can try that works best on platformed stages is to airdodge then fast fall.

For instance you are coming down onto Battlefield (not in tumble because you wiggled out of it) after getting up-aired by Fox. If he comes at you with a bair/nair/etc you can time your airdodge in a direction that will avoid the move, then you can fast fall onto (or beneath?) a platform to return to a neutral position.
